230 grn Lee 300 Blk mold

For those of you that cast and shoot 300 Whisper/BLK, Midway and Lee have teamed up to make a 2 cavity 230 grn mold with bullet ogive and crimp groove made for the 300 Blk loading. Looks like its going to retail around $30 IIRC.

Until now, the best 300 Blk designed heavy mold was the NOE 247 grain mold, I think that some have determined it might be a bit close to the ballistic limits of a 1 in 8 twist, so the 230 grn might be just the ticket for the current standard in 300 Blk twist rate.. And the 230 is about 1/3-1/4 the price of the NOE.

Is there any concern with using lead bullets in an AR or chrome lined barrel?

I plan on reloading one day. Been saving my brass for a few years. Wife says we need a new house first.

I personally do not use lead bullets in the .223 due to the higher velocities which can contribute to barrel leading.
Not sure why you would need a new house to start reloading. One can start reloading for one caliber for under $50 and if space is a concern
you can load at the kitchen table or even a coffee table. But I warn you it can get out of control, I have several thousand bucks invested over the last forty
years.

biganimal - This bullet is a 30 cal not a 22 and moving at 1000 FPS.

As for the use of lead in an AR15 type rifle most would shy away for fear of lead being deposited in the gas tube and BCG as well. Lead will also accumulate in the suppressor so one that you could disassemble to allow cleaning is preferred.

I don't know of anyone producing chrome lined barrels in 300 Blackout, but I could be wrong. That said you'll never wear out a barrel shooting slow moving soft lead bullets.

To sum up: a bolt gun owner with a pistol can is the target audience for this LEE mold. But I'd probably try a few thru my AR just for giggles.

As Clicker says, there's a little issue with leading in AR platforms, there's a few people trying out the 247 Gr Bison Boolit, and a couple of recommendations are usually presented for all-lead bullets..

Use a gas check, OR use a slightly harder cast alloy..

Given the faster burn rates and the limited amount of powder being burned, the base of the bullet is exposed to much less harsh conditions, as a supersonic bullet..

A can that can be disassembled is preferred, as mentioned above.. If you DO go the route of gas checks, you may not want to use them with a suppressor, unless you firmly crimp them into place..


As in any new bullet with a suppressor, you test fire with out the suppressor into a new target to look for keyholing (bullet instability) or 2 holes (loss of gas check).

Overall, the Bolt action is the better host(I might be prejudiced..LOL) for the cast bullets, but the concerns in AR's have been positively addressed in the Cast Boolits and 300 BLK forums.

I cast a few using this NOE mold today and that's a really nice mold. This is clearly a case of "getting what you paid for" and after casting with it I'd be hard pressed to return to a Lee mold.
Now to lube & size them then load a few!

now wait a minute. go back and look at how many people had an objection to some bullets that might be fired in their guns at Shootzenfest. nothing wrong with that.

but now we are suggesting firing lead bullets through a can? and with a gass check that could come off and destroy, with possible bodily harm, the can on the next shot?

lead bullets are foul. the wax instantly melts and smokes. unburned powder will fill a can. ive used them for decades. now for 9mm i dont use them any more. 45 i still have some 1000s so ill use them but nobody wants them in their can. i wouldnt want them in mine either.

with my 22 upper, the not deticated one it has no gass tube either, the gass hole filled with lead but was no problem because i only used it for 22s. there was no gass tube. im sure a lead bullet will clog a gass tube.

just another 2 cents. be careful.
