In an AR rifle the whole 5.56 vs 223 thing may not be a big deal.
Nato spec in a Sporting bolt action cut for 223 can make for some over pressure and stuck cases. AR chambers tend to be "mil spec" (just a little big for reliability) compared to a commercial bolt action in a lot of cases.
This thing has become an urban legend over the years... from what I've been told and observed the middle paragraph here is why the rumor grew legs.
For the record... I have a Mini 14 marked ".223" and like Honey Badger- it don't care.
