Ok, I will put this up for discussion. I am thinking of getting a target / varmint style bolt action rifle to have a little more fun with. Besides, you can never have too many guns. Anyway, I am leaning towards a Savage 12 FV. I have a FFL that can get me one for $600 new out the door. I already have a .223, a .243, .270, and a 30-30 that can be used for other types of hunting, but I think I would like to have something that would be fun for longer distance shooting and would be something that could accept upgrades when the money allows. Am I missing anything in my thought process about caliber, brand selection, etc. Let me know what you think.

I had a 22-250 in the Weatherby Vanguard - it was a helluva varmint round. The hole it would put in critters vs a 223 is a BIG difference.

I'd call Jim at Northland Shooters (763-682-4296) and see a see about getting a Savage action and a Shilen or McGowen match grade barrel. Then just add your flavor of stock. Buy a few tools and a headspace gauge and put it all together yourself. If you want to do longer range with a 22/250 I suggest a 1/8 twist barrel so you can shoot the 75 grainers.

22-250 is a great round, and Savage makes a quality rifle.

How far out are you able to shoot at the range you go to?

Well, the range all depends on when I get the time to go shoot and where I happen to be. Most of the time I don't get to shoot until I am down where my parents live in Poteau. We have a little land down there that gives us some opportunities, as well as access to a 200 yard range, but other than that it is only when I get out to some friends houses out around Blanchard. The friends houses don't have ranges so it is mainly pistols and shotguns.

I had not thought about building one, but that may be something that might appeal to me. I know people build for Rem 700 actions all the time, but it just never occurred to me to think about building one around a Savage action. Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into this.

The great thing about a savage is that you don't have to pay a riflesmith to put it together. I've put all mine together in my shop with a bench vice and a few other tools.

The 22-250 is a great round. Really fun for putting a permanent part in whitetailed haircuts... It will also make a nasty little hole in yotes, old pumpkins in the fall and watermelons in the summer time. If you think that a 55gn ballistic tip out of 223 is nasty, wait until you ramp the velocity up with the 22-250. Eeeuwwwhh!!

I have a Savage 12FV and love shooting it. Put a Vmax 55 gr bullet ontop of 35 gr of Varget and you can hit a dime at 200 yds.

i have a howa bull barrel and i love it. 22-250 is a great round. it definitely takes care of varmints.
