Had three different motorolas of 60-120 range in price. At least one of the two pair stops working within 2 years. No more.

they got these new sell phones now. you put them on vibrate and they dont make any noise.

i was 35 ft up a tree and my wife was in a hunting treehouse we made. this game warden came down the trail, wouldnt have seen me if he had been looking up.

i called my wife and told her not to shoot the geezer coming her way. she said when he stopped about 20 feet in front of her she asked if she could help him, you know how a wife would say "EXCUSE me, can i help you?" he said well first tell me where you are, lol.

i had made a drag line with a blue plastic 55 gal drum, pulling sand out of the shallow end of the lake. the barrel had been laying there probably 2 years. the game warden said they were there to see if someone was baiting for bear. it was bear season and there might be 3 bears in Spartanburg county, but ive never seen one.

so cell phone is the way to go.

Ha yeah those new fangled cell phone are pretty good :D . However our cell service at the beach is spotty at best and was think 2 way would be easier to leave one on the beach and one at the house. I remember a while back motorola had a direct connect on one of their cells that would be neat. Thinking of getting like a 50$ pair to try. Worse case my son would end up with some sweet walkie talkies.

The motorola/nextel direct connect may be a good option. I think they will work without service. They are loud and tough as nails. Look for the flat one (not flip).

SAMs had some yesterday in chas area. Midland...looked like some decent ones...

I've had Uniden, Motorola, Midland, and several other cheap brands. I like the Motorola's the best usually, but I think they're all pretty similar.

I have these right now. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UE ... ge_o03_s00

My wife and I leave them in our packs when hunting, just in case something happens with the cell signal, which is pretty unreliable where we hunted the last couple years. Cell was generally good enough for text, which is much nicer than using the radios, but sometimes texts wouldn't even go through. It's nice to have the radios as a backup. We've also used them on road trips before when we've been in separate vehicles. Another reason I got those was the built in weather radio, which works well. I haven't really pushed the range yet, but they work fine within a mile in the woods, in our neighborhood, and on the highway.
