1911's

Also it's insurance against the gun being a moneypit because most good 1911 pistol smiths I've looked into will laugh at you if you ask them to go all custom on a RIA.

If you reload and you've got Mitch at J&K Bullets on your speed-dial then 45 can be a plinking round.

Otherwise get a 9mm. Who cares if a plinker runs 100%? Good tap-rack-bang practice IMO.

Just a crummy toy for $500

All our guns are toys. If someone wants a 1911 just to have one and they just want to smash pumpkins with it then why spend the extra money?

If he decides to be a serious USPSA Single Stack Competitor then he can flip it and get a fancy blaster.

This is a good point. And I guess .45ACP could be a cheapish plinker, but it's such a serious cartridge in terms of accuracy and capacity that I couldn't see myself doing it unless it were for a challenge, either personal or competitive.

A gun that doesn't run 100% is a bad situation waiting to happen. You just never know when your ass will be on the line. I won't keep a pony in my stable that doesn't haul ass when I put the spurs to her.

Better to buy a nice piece of equipment than a shitty piece of equipment.

I'm gonna go with Will on this one. Either buy a nice one or save your pennies. You've waited this long why rush it? What people are willing to say on a forum and what is reality don't always line up. Ask me how I know.

I had a ROCK tactical. It was a great gun I think I paid 400 bucks used. Decent trigger good adjustable sights. Fun to shoot and cheap. They are really hard to find right now. It was 10 times better then my Springfield GI.

That's interesting. I've been wondering since this thread took off if there is a GI model out there worth having to shoot. I've never shot a standard M1911, but it doesn't seem that appealing, what with the small safety and odd grip safety shape.

While in the Army I'd fight you if you wanted to give me one of the worn out 1911's to carry. the barrel would have so much slop around the bushing, that Inaccuracy was the name of the game.
Hated them, untill getting the Kimber with adjustable sights about five years ago. Then fell in love with the platform. Its amazing how accurate they can be.

9mm is fun to shoot in a1911 and you can't beat the cost. I found it hard to find magazines for my 9mm that were very good. 45acp cost more to shoot, but fun to see those big holes in the paper. I've had a competition Colt 45acp and a Taurus 9mm. Both guns served there purpose. My advise is to just get whatever gun you get for a good enough price that you can can get your money back out of it whether it is a $500 gun or a $1000 gun.

My daily 1911 cost me about $625 10 years ago. Mods.... 'cause thats what it takes to get out of the "shitty" thing right?

$0...well..$15, I did put some thin rubber Houges on it cause I like thin rubber grips.

I have painted the front site white... and shot it a lot. Mine is a FR serial 80 series,,, that came with a lanyard hammer and the ejection port is lowered and flared from the factory.

That pistol has been carried all over... and in some of the worst 'hoods in America... Detroit, Miami-Ft Lauderdale...even North Tulsa a time or two.

I don't know who says we need to sink a butt load of dollars into a carry-plinking-range gun... and you can if you want.

Oh...my 1911 is worth about $750 today... and I made money on a GI Mixmaster Auto Ordinance I owned for a while.

Adam...save a couple of bucks and go shopping. STI makes a nice pistol in the $600 range.

For it's intended purpose... that little safety wont click OFF in a holster and wont gouge the heck out of your love handle. It's plenty big for daily use.
Grip safety with out a speed bump? Golly- how did we ever get along without those? IF your really having troubles with that...bend the spring out a little.
Lot's of the old Texas Rangers would bind it down with raw hide.. and I've seen a few early commercial Colts that had the GS pinned down

Sights... the GI sights are a little tiny. They are OK at defensive distances. Yea..if I was shooting a 1911 for speedy contests a set of Novacks would be better.

As a pure fighting handgun...simple is better... and you probably cannot beat a basic 1911- no bells or whistles for that work.

Seems weird to plink with a 45?

Funny ... many of us old guys learned to shoot "plinking" I am not a crack rifle shot by any stretch of imagination... but shooting dirt clods and rocks at random elevations and distances made me a fair field shooter. Casual shooting will teach you what your gun CAN do.

Next time your feeling all full of yourself...head out to a pasture and walk a tin can around with your hand blaster....or see if you can hit a oil drum out there at 300 yards- with a J frame 38.

Sometimes it seems like people get so caught up shooting for a "purpose" they forget about the pure fun of shooting for fun.. 22 to 45/70!

would recommand, Colt, springfield and smith&wesson they come the closed to saying in spec. from what I have heard dan wesson is not bad. Kimber is touch and go, I dont like their customer service department and lack of attention to detail on simple tasks (for the money.) I would not recommand any overseas guns, RIA, American Tactical etc, bad spec guns, bad alloy comp and no resale value, most good parts dont fit these guns anyway. Fusion arms is a big no no as well, remsport is no go as well.

I recommand that no matter what brand you choose to have it inspected, trash the factory mags and go chip McCormick.

happy hunting,

Anthony

Gotta disagree with you there. I've had nothing but trouble with Chip McCormick magazines. My Checkmates have been great, as have my Mec-Gars. It's worth noting that lots of factory mags these days are one of those two makers.
