depends on your load.
16# is factory spec 1911 govt, you can usually go down to a 14# for slightly under factory loads. For defense, if its reliable, a 16# is fine. 18# are fairly popular for stout defense loads and factory, well crimped ammo.

16# will be fine, try a 14# too, see how they feel. Swap the 14# out every 1500 rounds.
