Any one with a magazine recommendation for 1911 (government) in 45ACP?
I have been looking at the Wilson Combat model 47D at midway.

Wilson's are what you will see in most of the pouches at a match. Of course, that is not always the indication of what everyone should be using, in this case it is a pretty good hint.

Wilson 47d's are good, and that's a good price.
I personally like Tripp Cobra Mags, they're a little more expensive but I've not had a single issue with any of the six I have. They've also never exploded when droped from my pistol during a mag change.

You can't just throw that little tidbit out there and not elaborate on it.

Just saying that some mags, when droped, can fly apart when they hit the floor. This often causes you to spend a bit of time looking for the spring & small parts & any rounds you had in the mag when dropped.

I had a Wilson mag explode when I loaded it into a Wilson pistol at one of the H&H expos. Anyone can make a lemon. I did end up passing on shooting their products because they couldn't find another mag.

Unfortunately I think H&H has the hardest floors around and have have had various magazines fly apart there. That said I've had great luck with McCormick, Tripp and Wilson mags. With the Tripp being the only one that works with my 9mm 1911 ;)

yep....not really an issue at heartland since the floor is somewhat padded, but everywhere else (especially H&H's hard floors) you might get a mag fly apart when it hits.

I can add a 10 round mag to not get.
Before the hose down shoot at Ponca, I ordered two Kimber cheapo's. Could not get more than 7 rounds in them. Finally filed the followers down, and made them work. That is not acceptable in my opinion. They should be QC'd if they want to maintain their reputation.

I've used Wilson combat and have never had one "explode". I shoot outdoor shoots, so that is probably the reason.

I agree, wilson makes a good mag. I wasn't pointing out wilson's specifically. It happens to alot of mags from many different manufacturers. I was just saying that none of my Tripp mags have ever flew apart in the middle of a match.

I haven't seen the Tripp mags. Where would one look for them?

I probably just dont run my gun as hard as the 3 gunners do. Ive had real good luck with McCormics. Ive got a couple that have been used a bit over the last 8 years... never had any trouble with those in several 1911's that have passed my way.

I borrowed a 47 D that just did not agree with a GI parts Auto Ordinance... but it even ran on the Chip Mc's

The bottom blew out a a factory Colt 8 rounder I owned....nearly new. The floor plate broke in the welds about the 3rd shot. I thought the gun blew up or a second...

HaHa, I was working on this as you were posting :D

This is why I like Tripp mags:
For the following pics Tripp parts are the ones towards the top of the pic....

The surface finish of the Wilson isn't bad but the Tripp is highly polished for smoother mag loads & drops. Kinda hard to see the finish in this pic but.....

Here's the followers, the Trip has much more surface area to slide straighter up the tube.....

Finally the spring. Check out the length & the finished end on the Tripp spring....

I would've taken a pic of the mag base but it wouldn't be fair, I have some really nice Dawson Precision bases on my Tripp mags. But, as with the rest, I think the stock bases on the Tripp mags are much better than the Wilson's.

The Wilson mag that exploded on me was being inserted into a 1911, not dropped on the floor. Just to clarify.

That can happen to any of them if the base is broken or isn't securely re-installed after cleaning. But some mags do have better methods of attaching the base than others.

I'm not really that rough on my mags, but I don't consider them as something that's going to last as long as the gun.

I've used CM shooting stars & power mags, they ran fine but I'm not really big on their construction or the followers.

I'll bet the problem you had with the 47d is because they tend to sit a little higher in the gun than most mags. This is where their legendary feeding reliability comes from. If you look at the path the cartridge takes to the chamber, it's almost straight in, with very little sliding up the ramp. Because they sit so high in the gun, they can cause problems in pistols that have low(ish) ejectors. Like I said before, they're good mags, but your pistol has to like them. I've not had any problems with them but I definitely like my Tripp's better. :D

I too prefer the Tripp Cobra mags. I've used both 7 and 8 round versions. IMO, they are worth the money.

Wall, Do you mind adding a photo showing the difference between the feedlips on the Wilson vs Tripp? That's another area where they are different.

Edit: Last time I checked Tripp offers qty discounts, too.

I'll try to remember to take a pic of the feed lips & add it tonight.

As far as cost, they're not that much more. I think I paid $32 per mag vs. $28 for the Wilsons.

I use the 8R-45-RG
