    Surviving Coronavirus

The two gun clubs I go to for cowboy action matches have reopened, but if that is justified, how have conditions changed to suddenly be fine letting everyone shoot again, although under strict distancing conditions and limited group size? South Carolina is still under an official State of...

SASS SC State Championship Match at Greenville Gun Club 9/20-23

Participated in my first State match. Someone said it best that "there were many challenges", especially with temps more like mid summer than the first of autumn. Wouldn't trade it for rain though. The awards banquet was really interesting.

    MK VII Reloading

Awesome, but I won't be spending $2749+ on another loader anytime soon. Those shooting 500 and up rounds a month might be more interested.

    New Lee Pro 4000 press

Did well with the case feeder loading 150 rounds of cowboy 38 Special and would urge anyone to consider it standard equipment, so the right hand stays on the handle and one is focused on priming and bullet placement on the other side. Still working on adjustments and my technique with the new...

    New Lee Pro 4000 press

The case feeder assy arrives today or tomorrow, so I will report after trying the full rig the way I had intended to run it for volume. I did have to rig a way to catch ejected rounds. I have corresponded with Inline Fabrications about a raised mount, to include a provision for hanging a catch...

    New Lee Pro 4000 press

I believe you mean calibers. I initially have gotten the .357 shellplate (#1), intending to load my 38 Special for SASS. If I do other cartridges, I will need to purchase a shell plate and breech lock adapters for the dies. Note that this press and its shell plate selection only supports...

    New Lee Pro 4000 press

I have one of the new presses and am compiling evaluations to share. I would characterize the press as a 4 station version of the Pro1000 without the primer jam issues. It incorporates lessons learned from the other models. What seems essential to me is addition of Lee's case feeder with...

YouTube Videos from Upstate Cowboy Action Matches

Abe E. S. Corpus, my friend. That pump rifle is my Uberti Lightning 357 that Longhunter fixed up for me. I run 357 brass in it. I already owned it before joining SASS, so I would go in more conventional directions if starting from nothing. I am also not fast enough to outrun a stock gun, so it...

    What I am loading lately

My current focus is on Tier III Ruger-only 45 Colt loads for my Redhawk. I have one of the 5.5" guns that is no longer offered and it is Magnaported. I am trying to use IMR 4227 but find scant data for the bullet weights I am using. I did find out that there really is only one 4227 these days...

    Range day packing list

Got the forcing cone and throats corrected on that Redhawk and now see no problems with pressure signs and have done fine exploring the really heavy 45 Colt loads. Cases eject much more easily. The lesson is that tight throats increase pressure by a bunch.

Getting saddled up for some range time today and packing a number of revolvers: Ruger Single Seven 327 Federal Ruger Redhawk 45 Colt Tier II-III Uberti El Patron Belleza 45 Colt Tier I Ruger Match Champion 357 Mag Uberti Outlaw 44-40 Ruger Anniversary Flat Top Blackhawk 44 Mag Ruger Flatop...

    Getting the .357 bug

Big difference in the grip and the angle of the recoil. I would not be worried about 357 magnum in a gun of any substantial size. It is the really big stuff where you need more to hang onto and a grip exactly to your liking. A single action is generally fine if you learn to let it roll. A...
