If I put a magnifier on a hinge mount in front of a red dot, would that put me in tactical or open? Would that count as 2 optics or 1?

Might as well put a red dot on your pistol and a long extension tube on the shotgun too if you're going to shoot open.
That rule is almost as dumb as saying red dot's can compete in irons!

The magnifier is supposed to stay on the gun for the whole match.

This is my understanding as well. You can flip the magnifier to the side when not in use so it's basically a weird version of a good 1-4x variable scope like most guys prefer.

a magnifier does not count as an optic, even for uspsa. why i can't have one on my iron gun eludes me though if thats the case, but it is. an optic and a magnifier count as ONE optic.
