Just a rant....

Backstory: So a local metro PD ordered a bunch of AR15s from manufacturer....let's just say manufacturer DT. The patrol guys got excited. So my girl (who is an officer who works there) calls me all excited about getting a new rifle. She tells me what brand and I'm like "honey, why don't you just go ahead and keep using my spare Colt". She catches my drift. A couple of their guys do a little research and discover that company DT doesn't have an outstanding reputation. So local metro PD rangemaster calls me up and says that he is catching hell from the troops because they think he bought cheap rifles. I told him that was because he did. I mean, who wouldn't love a brand new AR for 300 clams...

Rifles come in and he calls me and asks if I will come and give them a once over. I agree. I go up to local metro PD and start pulling rifles apart. The first thing I notice is the gas key staking job was freaking horrendous. On all 20 rifles. I tell Rangemaster, "dude, I'd send these back. There is no way these bolts are gonna make it through a 1000 round rifle school". So he calls up manufactuer DT and they explain to him that they use a machine to press the staking at 50,000psi (as I'm breaking the screws loose with no effort by hand). Manufacturer tells Rangmaster "we think they are staked GOOD ENOUGH". WTF is "good enough" on a patrol rifle that someone's life depends on? Again I say, WTF?
I get a second opinion from some big-time 3-Gun guy named Kurt and he says, yeah send em back. So boxed up and off they went.

Today: I get an email from Rangemaster. He says he is confused and doesn't understand why I feel the need for the staking. He forwards me an email from a company that manufacturers ARs and bolts. They do not stake their gas keys, but rather use some type of gasket sealer on the bottom of the gas key. Included in the email is a line from the company's gunsmith that says "I prefer to not stake the BCG because it makes it TOO DIFFICULT to remove the gas key, in the event I need to work on the bolt". DUH, that is exactly what I want the staking to do. I don't want the gas key to come off. EVER. Instead they suggested that he use a dab of blue Loctite on the screws. When they wany to remove the gas key, they apply heat and remove screws. HOLY CRAP! Isn't that the part of the gun that gets really hot? WTF?

Rant over.

Think it's fair yOu come out and tell us who the company is (I have an idea). I know I don't wanna do any business with them.

How about I start a poll and we will see how many of us would trust our lives to unstaked (but blue loctited) or unproperly staked BCG-equipped rifles? LOL

I suspect I know how the results would look.

Rant part two, from big fat 3-gun guy named Kurt.

The staking talked about was just a little dimple on one side and nothing on the other to speak of. I asked Troy if the makers 9 year old daughter had done the work that day. Now I am the first guy to say it simply DOESN'T have to be like some of the "chart" type staking, BUT it does have to raise some of the Key metal over the top of the screw. I am a huge proponent of 3 good points of staking with metal over the key and the HIGH TEMP grade of Red Lock Tite! It has a higher yeild point than Rock Set which is used on suppressor mounts, in the range of 1650 degrees. I just plan that if I need a new gas key the whole carrier should go as well!!! I have a rifle on it,s 5th barrel and it still hasn't needed a new key, and all it has is High temp red.

The problem of "chart" type staking is that if the stake isn't done low enough the screw can back out and STILL leak! but it looks real good. I have run into this from time to time on some reral high end "chart" rifles and it has gotten to the point that when I get a new rifle I re-do this whole thing to my liking not some charts liking! and that is my rant.

I never said "big fat", I said "big time"! LOL

Kurt is exaclty right, which is why I called him and got his opinion. Blue Loctite is no bueno. Red is bueno. And even then, I still want metal on metal. I'm funny that way.

I really liked the part about "we dont stake cuz they are too hard to take off". LOL

These were purchased by another agency. Not my buy. And let me clarify, Delton didn't say the part about the Loctite and not staking. Delton is fixing the issue on their end. I still didn't like their "good enough" comment, but whatever.

This is interesting. My upper is a Del-Ton, and the gas key is staked quite well. Maybe their $300 rifle package is a fixer-upper package.

These rifle were all sequential (sp?) Serial Numbers. It could been a bad day at the factory, staking machine outta whack, who knows. I'm not saying they're bad guns, just that problem. I woulda fixed them, but being department guns I didn't want to void any warranties they carry.

I'm calling BS (not boomer shooter either) on Troy. The part where he claims: "So my girl (who is an officer who works there) calls me..." just doesn't sound right to me. He should have known that everyone would believe the DT rifle story, but making up a fake "girl" just isn't going to fly around here sir!

Troy- good call on that one. I had no idea on what this was about. Found a related article http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=122 on Proper Staking of carrier key screws. Good call.

That made me leery too. Lol!

I guess their quality control was having a bad day as well... ;)
