General Discussion, AGAIN?

Several people have already states some reasons for a GD forum. The only thing I'll add as to reasons why I would see having a GD forum or a BS forum for people are the ones who sit in front of a computer at work and like to BS with other like minded people during the course of the day. Kinda like how some people pretty much keep facebook open all day at work and chat and message people online while they're working. For some people, BS chat on forums / facebook makes the day job trapped in a cubicle a little more bearable, rofl.

I'm sure those who don't sit in front of a computer for their day jobs or don't have a lot of idle time while at work hate the idea of a GD or BS forum because they have to wade through a ton of off-topic posts just to get to the stuff that they're interested in.

I'd say make the GD or BS forum public, but add in a filter so that the "new content" button doesn't include anything from the GD board.

i would like a GD forum but heavily, heavily regulated. only reason why (i want one) is because i don't know of any other place where i can get local input, meaning if i want a good plumber out of OKC, or where is a good place to buy fresh steak to grill near edmond, etc..... but on the flip side i don't like the politics, etc.. fights..

It will be, I assure you.

This is not a site for those with casual interest in firearms to talk about refrigerators. It is a resource for people wanting to learn more about training, competitions, self-defense and the associated hardware.

I guess it's is out of sight, out of mind, but it's going to have its repercussions in the other subforums. Don't be surprised when there are 9 threads asking what the best 1911 for under $147 is. The single biggest problem I have with OSA is that it is watered down. There is good info there, but it's so mixed in with bullshit that it might as well be called the Oklahoma Cigar and Yacht Association.

I know we want BS.com to grow, but we want it to grow with the right kind of members....shooters (and would-be shooters). We have the most knowledgeable and experienced guys here (no, I'm no talking about myself). I don't want them to get put off by a bunch of anonymous armchair quarterbacks! I'd rather argue with a doorknob that try to have a logical discussion with some of the jamokes that are going to trickle in.

In summation, this is not a good idea!

If threads are posted about firearms, those threads will be moved to the proper forum. The general "off-topic" discussion forum is exactly that - for discussion having to do with things other than firearms. As it has already been said, the off-topic forum will be heavily moderated and monitored for content. Furthermore, if you don't want to see the forum, no one is making you see the forum as you must request access to the said forum.

If you don't want to see the forum, no problem. Don't request that it be made available to you. It's that simple.

If there were enough members and who would appropriately rate a thread, you could use a system like Slashdot where you can filter what you choose to see based on a rating. Stupid threads will quickly get rated low and will automatically be off of people's radar based on their preferences.

Did you read my post past the first paragraph?

It's not the existence of a general discussion forum I dislike, it's the BS created in the topical forums by the GD'ers.

I guess Brandon will have to take this little tidbit down: ALL GUN TALK - Competition and Training - NO FLUFF

I read the entire post, twice actually.

To be clear, any post that is not on-topic within any forum on Boomer Shooter, will be moved to the proper forum or removed entirely.

Again, let me reiterate that if you don't want a general discussion forum, don't request that you have access to that forum. Therefore, there will be NO FLUFF when you are viewing the forum.

DuBois and Jesse do a damn fine job of monitoring the forum to ensure everything is running smoothly and keeping it all on-topic. I am a moderator for the 2nd Amendment forum, Photo forum, and the General Discussion forum. If you find something that needs to be brought to someones attention, please let us know.

This is a dead topic. I assure you that this sight will grow in numbers if you put up a GD section. Most of you know each other and from what I can see you want your own personal gun forum with no wants of growth in numbers. So be it. My point all along has been that (and I'll just put it out there) I want this site to dominate OSA because of the pure ignorance in the way that site is ran. At any point of the day if you look over there the highest number in viewers is always in GD followed with Classifieds second. If you keep this forum just gun only then you have ultimately closed yourself off to being the premier gun forum in Oklahoma or anything bigger. All the big forums no matter what they are have a GD. My reasons for wanting a GD are selfish and I admit and own that BUT I am so sick and tired of OSA and would love a place to call home. I just don't understand what all the discussion is about. If you don't like the GD section then simply don't go there. Are you mad because theres a GD section on here and people are using it? Why? Maybe I'm the one not getting it. I'm here with or without the GD section. I felt honored when I was asked to come over here and I like this forum so I'm here to stay either way.

Can you REQUIRE that everyone put their real name in their profile. This is a good idea even without a general forum.

I think you moderators are going to have to spend too much time moderating. You shouldn't have to do that.

Burk,

The problem with requiring people to put their real name in their profile is that, no one really knows if that's the person's name or not. However, I agree that a person should have a full profile with accurate information, especially if they're using the classifieds as it makes the other party a little more comfortable with the transaction.

There won't be nearly as much moderating as what people think. I monitor the forums I have moderation status on very closely and if there's an issue, it will be dealt with accordingly.

I would like to have mine under the avatar

I think its a good idea but we should keep politics out of it. If you wanna talk politics make it about the second amendment and leave it in that section. Just my opinion.

Fair enough

No problem there. Politics, religion, and abortion are the restricted topics that are not allowed to be discussed in any form.

Boomer Shooter is first and foremost a firearms forum and community and as such, this off-topic forum is provided to the members as a courtesy for topics other than firearms. Therefore, the administration of this forum reserves the right to remove and/or edit any post or topic that is deemed to be inappropriate in nature.

The following topics WILL NOT be allowed for discussion:

  • Politics - this includes political jokes or images of any kind.
  • Religion - you believe what you believe, and let everyone else believe what they choose.
  • Abortion - it goes without saying that telling someone else what they can or can't do with their body only stirs up trouble.

The following WILL NOT be tolerated for any reason whatsoever:

  • NO racism of any kind, this includes jokes or images
  • NO vulgarity of any kind, this includes jokes or images
  • NO personal attacks (flaming) of any kind

If you have an issue with another member that needs to be resolved, take it to private message. DO NOT involve the rest of the forum in your problems.

Failure to adhere to the fore-stated guidelines can and will be grounds for suspension of your membership.

The administration of this forum and website reserves the right to amend these guidelines at any time, with or without notice.

Oh yes, now I remember.

Jamie this post is not directed towards you. Your post just gave me an avenue to give my personal feelings on the topical questions.

Most of you know each other and from what I can see you want your own personal gun forum with no wants of growth in numbers. So be it.
I'm not opposed to growing, I just opposed to compromising our principles to attain that growth.

My point all along has been that (and I'll just put it out there) I want this site to dominate OSA because of the pure ignorance in the way that site is ran. At any point of the day if you look over there the highest number in viewers is always in GD followed with Classifieds second.
Why does it come down to us or them. I'm an active member of both sites & I know where to go to get what I'm looking for.

If you keep this forum just gun only then you have ultimately closed yourself off to being the premier gun forum in Oklahoma or anything bigger.
Many already consider this the premier gun forum in Okla. :D

see response above

Everyone is more than welcome & I'm glad we're all here.
My problem is that even though the GD is only visible to those that request it. The moment someone gets their feelings hurt or pissed off about something in GD. That animosity & hard feelings are going to spill over into the gun threads. Cyberstalking or just plain being a jackhole & contradicting everything the offending poster says just to piss them off. Then "we" have to deal with the pissing contest too. If that could be kept out of the gun related threads so we never see it & "nothing changes" for us, I say let 'em post away about whatever they want. I just know it can't happen.

If you think there'll be civility & harmony in a GD forum, just look at what talking about having a GD forum has done.
