I'm in the market for a set of sights and an extended mag release for a Glock 17. There are so many choices I don't know which to get. Any help? This gun will be used for HD, carry and IDPA.

I put a dawson precision that is made to work with the factory front sight on mine. Also turned the rear sight around. Simple and very effective sight upgrade.

Here is my G34. It has Dawson sights and an JP ext mag release.

Here is my G34 production gun. You could upgrade the G17 mag release to a G34 for a little extra length without the paddle.

Ok so Dawson for the sights. On their website there are a lot of different heights and notch widths. How do I know which ones to get? The JP ext. mag release and the Vickers are the extended ones I've been looking at. Will I have to cut out a spot in my frame for the teardrop shape of the JP button or does it stick out past where it isn't hitting?

At the match Sunday night I never used my sights. All my training (no formal training. Just what my older brother that is a EOD Naval Special Warfare has taught me.) I've been taught to point where my eyes are looking. Works awesome for close up body size targets. But I had problems with the smaller poppers so if I had a front sight that catches my eye. I could maybe hone in on the smaller targets.

The trick to shooting fast in all situations is to know what the required sight picture is for every possible target presentation. If you are trying to hit the broad side of a barn you could do that with your eyes closed. If you are shooting at a gnats ass you better have the front and rear sights aligned with the perfect amount of space around the sides.

The Heartland matches are usually pretty close up shooting so my sight picture is often times my gun pointed at the target. But when those little poppers and plates and head shots happen I go to the front sight and make sure the rear is in the area too.

To install the JP you remove the stock unit first. then you take the teardrop shaped tab off the tapped extended glock mag release button. Once the extended button is installed you reinstall the teardrop button on the end of the mag release. No modification required and it takes all of 10 minutes.

Thanks Guys. Got them ordered from Dawson. Ordered the JP mag release from Midway. When I get them in my Glock will be going to Mr. Cyrwus for an install and stipple job with undercut.

Hope these are the right ones. lol

to reiterate what jesse is saying is that you can only shoot as fast as you can hit. either way you should still have an acceptable sight picture. an acceptable sight picture changes on each situation. in real life it become more of an issue because of round accountability. I tend to see every shot that I take. I can call my bad hits along with my good ones. with the non f/o sights on my duty gun I can see the front sight so crisp and clear its crazy. I tend to shoot a fiber optic like a red dot, except my focal point remains on the front sight and not the target.

Crap you should have ordered the Dawsons from Mike. Hexwas ordering today. You could have saved shipping $.
