Question about AR lowers.

Hey everyone, I have a couple of question's and am hoping that yall will be able to help me.

My question is: Is there any difference between a AR pistol stripped lower and a rifle stripped lower?

If there is no difference, and you buy a stripped lower, what would they put in on the 4473? If you bought it and told the FFL that you are building a pistol, would they submit it as a pistol? Or do they have to list them as a rifle?

I don't know what they put on the 4473 but you can buy the rifle lower and use it as a pistol. From what I understand there is no advantage to purchasing a pistol lower.

I thought you could use a rifle lower to build a pistol, but I was just wondering if you can ask that it be run as a pistol. I am not reaaly interested in building a pistol, but since all the BS going on right now about "Military Assault Rifles" I think it might be a good idea if they don't know how many AR's someone has

When Trevor (Red River Ammo) did mine on the first GB if I remember correctly it was registered as "receiver". I'm not 100% sure on that though.

Yea Trevor and I looked into this - and they are in fact registered as a receiver. I actually asked a similar question and got this response according to the 4473 paperwork:

"If a frame or receiver can only be made into a long gun (rifle or shotgun), it is still a frame or receiver not a handgun or long gun. However, they still are “firearms” by definition, and subject to the same GCA limitations as any other firearms. See Section 921(a)(3)(B). 18 U.S.C. Section 922(B)(1) makes it unlawful for a licensee to sell any firearm other than a shotgun or rifle to any person under the age of 21. Since a frame or receiver for a firearm, to include one that can only be made into a long gun, is a “firearm other than a shotgun or rifle,” it cannot be transferred to anyone under the age of 21. Also, note that multiple sales forms are not required for frames or receivers of any firearms, or pistol grip shotguns, since they are not “pistols or revolvers” under Section 923(g)(3)(a)."

Everytime I have bought a stripped lower it has been listed as "other" on the form. And when they call in the background check they also used the term "other"

Thanks for the info guys, I had been wondering about that for a while now. I didn't even know that there is a "Other" option

They just changed the 4473 about a year and a half ago to add the option. They were yellow for a while so you knew you had the new forms.

It used to be on the 4473 it had to be either listed as Rifle or Pistol, and if you checked Rifle, you couldn't make it a pistol (legally). Physically there is no difference. The new forms mentioned have a third option, "Other" so you don't have to specify rifle or pistol at time of purchase, and you can make it into either.
