AR-10 and Heavy Barrel questions

I'm screwing around. I plan on buying parts here in the next couple weeks (whether the QD group buy goes through or not) to get started building an AR. I'm a little curious as to whether or not I should do an AR-10 first. I wanna do some long-ish range target shooting and possibly hunting, too. Would it be doable to use for 3 gun (should I decide it's worth investing in) of would it be better to get a 5.56 upper? Would that even work?

I also asked a question on OSA that has yet to be answered. I was wondering about barrel weight and lenght. I saw a couple while I was looking around @ H&H and one of the AR-10s had a huge, heavy barrel. I had hears that this helped with accuracy to an extent but I'm not 100% certain if this is true or just someone trying to fill me full of elephant dung. Anyone got an answer for me on that one?

If you go AR-10 - that is a totally different lower. I love the flexibility of the AR15 platform. If you want long range look at maybe the Grendel. Pretty impressive out of a 24" barrel at 1000 yards
 
I don't know about heavier barrels, but I am pretty sure that having a longer barrel it will increase accuracy

So there's no universal lower that will accept both a 7.62 and a 5.56 upper? No big surprise there. I kinda figured I'd have to build two rifles if I wanted two calibers. The reason for 7.62/.308 is ammo availability.

And before anyone makes fun of me for wanting a higher caliber, that's all it is. Just something I want just to have it. I don't think I'll ever shoot out to 1000 yards. The farthest I've shot so far is 400.
 
Yea, it deals with the length of the 308 (7.62) round vs the 5.56 - its not compat. with the magazine well.

Rounds to check out that ARE compatible with the AR15 lower:

5.56/223
6.8 SPCII
6.5 Grendel
300 AAC Blackout
numerous wildcat rounds

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. Barrel length only affects velocity and weight of the barrel

Meh. I kinda figured. I'm perfectly allright with building 2 different rifles for 2 different purposes. Just another project. 'Tis part of the fun, no?

So what do these bulky-looking, heavier barrels do? Look kinda cool?

I don't know what it is about that stock but it looks sexy. It'd be awesome if it does something more than look badass. I'd almost be interested in buying one then.
 
The heavy barrels take longer to heat up and has more surface area to cool faster. And changes the harmonics because of the stiffer barrel.

Does that help accuracy, reliability or longevity at all?

EDIT: I'm assuming the grooves in the barrel ( I believe its called fluting) is to save weight?
 
From the articles I've read. The harmonics part of it helps accuracy. Being that the barrel is stiffer when shot. Because it wiggles/vibrates less. When your barrel does the same thing repeatedly then your accuracy and groups will be better. If I can find the video clip again, I'll post it. It shows a the barrel flex in slow motion.


Some say that fluted barrels cool faster due to more surface area. And yes also to reduce weight. Some also look pretty damn snazzy. Those solid spiraled barrels look damn neat.
 
Those buttstocks are awesome. Adjustable for comb height and length of pull.
 
Having seen a couple of heavy barrels whilst shopping around, I go curious as to the affect they are supposed to have.

I found this photo and for demonstrative purposes. I have seen that stock before so I asked what it does. I was told that it was adjustable for comb height and length of pull. I was told that the heavy barrel had more surface area to help it cool and was informed that the size/weight changed the harmonics.

The question I have now is; Are any of those things something a novice shooter like me needs to worry himself with?
 
It all depends on what your wanting to do with the rifle. Are you just wanting a fun plinker, 3 gun and such comps, long range target shooting or hunting? That stock pictured (Magpul PRS) is mainly for bench and prone shooting. On the barrel part of you question. It falls into the same thing of what you want to do with the rifle. A heavy barrel is best for long shot strings. Great for target shooting hunting (pd hunting/coyote hunting).

Well, since I found out I'd have to build 2 rifles anyways, the QD Lower I'm looking at would sort of be 3 gun/ plinker. I want a .308 for target and maybe hunting. Good thing I'm talking to a bunch of people who have built ARs before and know well enough what they are talking about.

To be honest, I made this thread so I could stop posting off topic in the LOKI build thread and I half expected them to move all of those posts out of that thread so others wouldn't be enticed to post off topic as well.
 
Well without seeing the video, all I can say is that Jerry usually uses just a standard old ACE butt stock. He will use some other stuff depending on sponsorship, but when it comes to winning and shooting in general he uses the ACE...how do I know? he is my hog hunting partner

BTW I have a DPMS M-12 308 rifle for sale, I just haven't posted it yet, 18" fluted barrel and so many extras I can't even begin to list them here. If interested let me know KurtM
 
Could you imagine the bad luck them hogs must have known they fell into? "Hey george, look, it's a couple of them damn hunters". "Oh Oh Bob, that looks like Kurt and Je....." POW, right through the noodle.

I think these two should at least have to shoot weak hand only at them piggy's..
