Has anyone that has used Duracoat ever had any problems with a color not being what you thought is should be? Here's my problem. I ordered Desert MarageFlage Camopak (paint only) a couple of weeks ago. I started the painting on Nov. 23 and finished coating on the 25th. When I was shaking the bottles to stir up the paint they looked like they should. After painting the Desert Mirage Tan looks like a silver color and the Desert Mirage Sand look like a blueish gray. I've email Lauer about it just wondering if anyone else ever had a problem.

Ive had a couple things like that happen. If you havent taken it outside and looked at it under sunlight, you should.

I will agree that the sand has a bluish tint to it, but I take it as more of a grey.

Once you apply the darker colors and do a light splatter mist over the part, im sure it will look a lot different.

Heres mirageflage I did a few years ago:

It's really blue and gray to me more than sand and tan

at least yours blends in with the concrete LOL. This is my coyote/target rig and I think it would stick out like a sore thumb to a coyote.

Don't take off what you have, just go over it with some of the earth colors to add more variation to it, especially for this time of year when we have so many brown leaves mixed with a few reds, oranges, not to mention the green cedar trees.

It looks good, even if you don't like the colors.

Never use "gun blue"! That's absolutely not what color it turns out. More like a navy blue. I just didn't like it. I generally go to duracoats website and check there colors.

Looks ok at his point, but if you look at this one, I think you can see that it is not what I would call "gun blue"! Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part.

Anyhow, just word to the wise.

I have had to strip the "Gun Blue" paint off of guns before in order to do a real blueing job on them
On a few I understood why they thought paint was better than nothing but really why not just have it done right?

I have actually found more than one with dents bondo filled and painted!

LOL, well this one needed some real attention and it is a beater gun. You know the "behind the seat in a farm truck for coyote and meth labs gun"! Anyways that was my first and it turned out ok. You really can't see just how not "gun blue" it is in the pics.

Ive had more problems with duracoat colors not looking like they are shown as in the samples, lately than ever.
But these are goofy type non practical colors. I have enough stock to where I just custom mix a color nowadays.

Well I finally got around to fixing my blue rifle.

Lauer sent me another camo pack on them. I mixed my own colors out of what I already had and what they sent.

I have been thinking on Duracoating a AK (WASR10) anything I need to know before I take on the project? For example, special preparation, cleaners, drying times, etc.

:o Whoa! Very nice!!

Here is my routine

1.) clean with degreaser to get all oils and dirt off (I use brake/parts cleaner in a spray can)
2.) Put modeling clay or silly putty in the chamber and muzzle of barrel.
3.) 220 grit sandpaper everything. Not white washing, just enough to rough it up good. The best way is to blast it with alum oxide but I don't have that luxury
4.) put on latex gloves and wipe everything down with acetone.
5.) let everything dry and get to room temp
6.) Spray thin coats, let coat flash off before next coat
7.) let dry 3 to 4 hours between colors

The main thing is you want the piece your coating to be as clean as you can possibly get it.

Thanks everyone for all the complements

I've done 5 rifles and the slide on my Glock and I really enjoy it. So far I haven't had any problems with adhesion using this routine.
