Well, it's the first time it has happened... I dropped one of my guns this morning! Thankfully it wasn't my new Springfield or Sig, it was my cheaper Remington R1, but it still makes me sick!!!
So here's what happened - I was pulling it out of my safe to look at something. I have a rack on the top shelf, and as I pulled it out the hammer caught the upper lip of the safe and spun it right out of my hand somehow... It dropped right to my cement basement floor! Grrr.... Tonight after work I will be rearranging my safe and moving my guns to the 2nd shelf!!!

It did very minor damage. There's a small nick on the edge of the hammer, a small nick on the edge of the grip safety, and a small spot on the leading edge of the nose where it took the finish off.

So here's a question for all my 1911 Fanatics crew - the R1 is listed as "Carbon Steel" and now I have bare metal showing. What should I put on these spots to prevent rust? I have seen the bottles of "bluing" at the gun shop but know nothing about this. I didn't know if I should take a very fine tip brush and put just a little on them?!?

I should add, the spot on the nose is so minor and small that you have to be looking for it to see it. It didn't deform the metal in any way. The hammer however, it has a rough edge now.

I don't think the various bottled bluing products do much, if anything, to prevent rust. It's more of a cosmetic thing. Most any blued gun will get surface rust if left uncared for. You can keep it wiped down with a thin coat of oil or, what I'd do, is keep a coat of Renaissance Wax on it whether you use any of the bluing products or not. That's my $0.02.

Dress the hammer with a jewelers file, de-grease it and cold blue it!

Ok, this is what I was thinking but wasn't sure since I've never dealt with this before. That's what I'll do!

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it! And yes, I will definitely be learning from this! Cheap gun or not, the finish was absolutely like new. That's how I like to keep my non-carry guns. I'm a little OCD about it actually, I am even hesitant to lay them down anywhere other than a mat or carpeted surface. Anywho...

Cool, thanks. I am going to use a drop of the bluing but will be sure to keep it oiled!

I'm with the above folks. Working guns will acquire "character". It is like a new car, it really isn't broken in until it has some dings and scratches :D I don't worry about touching up wear, just keep it oiled and watch for rust.

Has anyone that carries ever had to use the terlet while wearing your gun?
When I first got my holster and was getting used to it, I had to take the browns to the superbowl. Well pants halfway down and my belt come out of the first loop and crash. Yard saled my edc on the bathroom floor !

Awe crap! Good thing I was at home !

I know they're going to get wear, it's just that it's the first time I've done it so it's the hardest... Lol

I feel your pain. For a small investment, you can try borestore (sock-like) products. I have 1 for every gun in my safe. They're not super padded, but offer some protection & they're silicone impregnated.

I bought some of these from Midway to try out, thanks for the tip [emoji106]
