I am searching for a stolen M1911, Was stolen in West Virginia. I do have a serial number. The police was involved but no success. I was wondering if there is a way to do a search? I was told that there is a registry when one is purchased that they check to see if it has been reported stolen. Thank you in advance.

I know of no "Private" Stolen gun Registry"..........However every Police agency enters the serial number (and other criteria) into a National Stolen Firearms Data base. This data base is only accessible to LE but "most" agencies run every firearm they encounter through this system to see if it is reported stolen. Some states do have a "registry" of sorts (when you register a firearm in that state) but it is for the individual states use and most are not accessible on a national level.
YMMV.......TR

Hit every pawn shop, gun show, flea market and hand out fliers with description and S#. Pawn shops are supposed to check S#, but it won't hurt to drop them a line and keep an eye out to call the PD.

there are two options...available to LE only:

1) NCIC - National Crime Information Center - run by FBI - any stolen property with serial numbers is usually logged.
2) "E-Trace" - run by the ATF - can enter a serial number and if it was registered/sold to anyone, it will show the trail.

You'd have to file a report with your local PD and politely suggest these two checks (NCIC is usually a standard check...some may not know about "E-Trace"

You might try https://www.hotgunz.com/
You can do searches there and submit your serial number as stolen so people can check it before buying... Hope that helps!

One thing to remember is NCIC has to be renewed yearly make sure to do so. The person who advised to hit every pawn shop, gun show etc.... was correct. That's how I ended up recovering my ARMALITE. My Ruger Charger is sitting in evidence locker in the PD awaiting trial of the person that stole it tried to sell it to a pawn shop. The guy that bought the AR handed it to me and said he didn't want to get involved. Turned out he was a felon he handed me my rifle said he would eat the $1500 and ran before cops could arrive from 30 feet. Took a description and took the gun from NCIC. Also post on boards your a member of. With luck and bugging the detective you're weapon will come home. Locally they are to lazy to do the work, so you need to do it for them. A lot will end up in pawn shops and flea markets.

Where at in WV? If Cabell or withWayne area can point you in a direction or 2 to look. If those areas check flea market in proctorville & Chillicothe I've seen a lot of private sales go through there along Milton. All hot as can be. Ohio more than other. Also in Huntington the Kroger at 1st offered a Beretta for $50 wasn't in NCIC
or ATF Had to be hot but couldn't prove it.

Depending on the local agency where found, the gun gets held for a set period the gun then put up for sale, destruction OR as in my area a local LEO ends up with the gun. All nice and legal. There is no jurisdiction I know of that is required by statute to even attempt to contact the owner of a recovered gun. I know this is fact as I held a LEO fo > 20 years. if its stolen the chance the owner recovering is < 1%. There is no civilian database or access to NCIC one can use.

If still reported stolen in NCIC recovery agency is supposed to run it for criminal use. Mostly it ends up in a Leo's collection after 13 months if it shows clear. Most departments leave it up to you to locate

Send me PM with the serial # and I'll check it in the NCIC database. I supervise a E911 dispatch center that dispatches law enforcement. I am also certified to operate our state and federal systems.
