Shotgun Loading Help

Well fast is fast, and slow is slow. Smooth can be both fast and slow....depending on how fast or slow you are smooth, BUT...."tactical" is always slow. So if you get done with a stage and ask someone how that was and they say "man that was really tactical"....well you know :haha:

Wouldn't the statement be more correct if it was:

"slow until smooth, smooth until fast"

Or something like that?

Question to Kurt, Do you start off (I'm a TOTAL beginner), doing some blind practice, or start watching your hand the whole time, or what?

Good Point!

Start off by doing what ever Jesse says cause he is the Mayor of 3-gun and the worlds fastest shotgun loader; He said so himself on you tube! As you will notice from his "fastest video", he stares at his holders, at his gun and off into space with a steely eyed determination, If you can master that you are on your way.....well the steely eyed thing anyway. :sarcastichand:

I like to do at least half my practice eyes off, so my advice to a totally new shooter is to practice at least 50% with eyes off/blind, but remember I am not a "professional shooter", nor am I any kind of elected 3-gun official. I have never posted anything on you-tube, nor do I have the money to stay in a Holiday Inn, BUT I did get to eat the ears off a Chocolate Bunny!

As for all these trite sayings about slow/smooth/fast and real application. I will say this, in the progressions proffered, that is THE slowest way to get fast. You have to really push speed right along with everything else or it will take you a very long time to get fast. Every once in a while, like once a month or so, you've got to blow out all the stops, accept the wild misses and dropped shells and just plain blaze! If you don't do this it will take you FOREVER to transfer your "smooth" into fast

Thanks Kurt!

I've got to do a little work on my 1100 before I can really practice reloads much with it. That silly lifter latch is a pain, and the 3 round mag capacity... well, it's gotta change.

That's good stuff right there!! Well said.

No you were elected....by yourself! The statement was "you ought to be the mayor of 3-gun as you seem to know everything". Then you put it in your sig line and now....well you are the Mayor, elected for life and you can't get out of it. AHHHH The smileys aren't working this morning in my weak computer wa world.

I tried the whole slow smooth fast thing. It didn't work. You have to go fast to be fast, that's all there is to it. Push hard and give shots the respect they deserve, that's about it. But I'll defer to Kurt, Mike, and Jesse here, they're faster than me.

I just found the Worlds Fastest Shotgun Loader. Sorry Kurt!

Ref the slow = fast thing.

First if you don't have the method/technique down going faster means you mess up faster.
Fast / slow is a perception. That is why a timer is important when practicing. It is also dependate on the shooter and the shooters abilities/skills.

Once the idea or technique is understood one should push their self in speed and even ninja style if one wants. They first have to have an understanding of what they are supposed to be doing. For most that shouldn't take long.

Again if one is going faster than they are capable bad things can and usally will happen which equates to worse times/scoring. Slow a tick and dont fumble / miss and your scores / times will be better.

You push yourself to get better and that is the only way, but you have to know what your supposed to do and how to do it.
.
Not everyone is the King or have instant skills and many are just starting out. I see telling someone that hasn't a clue to blindfold theirself or go fast as being a waste of time, slowing aquiring the skills they are after and frustrating the heck out of one trying to get it down. My views shared as others have.

It was mentioned with the right technique you can not go to fast. How one comes to the right technique can be different for each person if they ever achieve the right technique. By not having a clue I bet is not the way to achieve it.

The whole idea behind smooth is fast is valid. It is a mental attitude to keep one from going faster than they can do x,y,z etc without jacking up.

Push yourself in practice and be smooth during a match. Again only my views.

Well Jery your first. I never said I was the "king" of anything, nor do I lay claim to instant skills, but I have been teaching this kind of stuff since I was an instructor for Gun-Site back in 89. Yes back When Chairman Jeff was in charge. I have taught it both ways and I can guaranty you that if you don't push it right away you will take a very long time to get speed. Yes you need a base first, which includes a BUNCH of tactile feel (kind of like if you do it blind), then you need to ballance both speed and precise movement ( we ARE NOT BUILDING MUSCULE MEMORY....there ain't no such thing!!), but in order to realise you can do stuff fast....you have to do stuff fast, but hey you can disagree all you want...I ain't the king....which segs nicely into Jesse

Jesse there is absolutely no need to appologise to me, I have never claimed to be the fastest loader/shooter/anything, nor have I ever claimed to be one of the two best shooters in the U.S. nor have I ever posted anything on you-tube, other folks have done that....not me. which brings us to part 3!!!

WTF is up with all these you-tube videos?? They are all really "I love me" videos, not really a cry for critique. When Thirston Throckmocker the 3rd post his blazing run in the Medow Muffin 3-gun National Challenge where he is shooting with his weak-hand and screwing a dead goat's head and kicking everyones ass in D class by 2.3 seconds he is NOT really asking where he lost any time! He is not wanting to hear...."well Thirston you were a bit slow on the transition in the middle of the array, and you could have used a bit more personal lubricant because when your fore-skin started to chaff you seemed a bit slow on the trigger. NO...he is wanting to hear how great he is. Now maybe his dog can't talk (mine can and you ought to hear what he says about you-tube) and he needs National reinforcement so he blasts it out onto You-tube....where as Marylin Manson said "we're all stars in the dope show".

Every forum is packed with video of every stage of every shooter of every skill level, and then we got the mag changes, the shotgun loading, the pumpkin shooting, and the face blasting....what ever happened to just showing up and shooting and going home? Just rtemeber all this you-tube stuff will be around a looooooong time and in 30 years someone is going to say "hey watch this dweeb!" and 12 year old will be watching it for entertainment.

Heck my channel has well over 200,000 views in the less than 3 years it's been live. I guess people actually want to learn about 3 gun and are starving for info. Welcome to the 21st century Kurt. Maybe someday I'll show this new thing that mildly popular called Facebook.

Well geeze Jesse a video of a guy teasing his talking dog with bacon has over 109,000,000 hits in less than a year, so I guess by your logic there are lots of folks wanting to learn how to taunt their talking dog and are starved for info on how to do that as well. BTW I know some of those 200,000 hit,s of yours in 3 years were kids trying to find cute cuddly bears and got to learn a few new words for their surfing endevors :sarcastichand: (I.L.T.B.)

Now this "facebook" of which you speak....is this the face book that has caused people to loose their jobs? Wives?, Freedom? Is this the place to make your private life public and record it all for posterity? Well we are back to Mr. Manson aren't we; cause we ARE all stars... :jester:

(NOTE: DISCLAIMER!!! I am just messing with Jesse who IS a friend of mine...or at least was untill he saw what I said on Facebook, and I hope you all see a little humor in this cause that is the way it is ment. I mean come on....Medow Muffin 3-Gun National Challenge, and did you notice to cool seg when in one post I mentioned my dog could talk and then two posts latter we are talking about a talking dog?.....Hell I could have told those guys how to taunt their dog....I got one!)

Before starting I will say I am not an instructor or pro shooter by any means... But I do know witch fancy guns to buy and have stayed at a holiday inn express before. When I said "think" smooth I didn't say anything about slowing down. Of course you have to go fast that's the whole point! But smoother is ALWAYS faster when given the same effort and Jesse is not having a problem with trying to go fast enough as I think is the case with most people.

Also if you lost your job, wife, or freedom off of some elephant dung you posted on Facebook then you deserved it anyway
