Not to be an ass, but please, never even consider using a dummy gun for anything other than training. A live weapon (or fake) should never be used to intimidate or influence any situation, it will only get you killed or locked up. The only time a gun needs to come out in a self defense situation is if somebody is going to die. You or a loved one are either going to be killed or you have to kill the bad guy to survive. No exceptions.

My sister that lives in okc, kept a chrome plated plastic 6 gun, toy version in her car, thinking this would deter somebody.
I found it and got rid of it, explaining how this can be a bad thing. I think she just went out and bought another.

I wont banter statistics... but a suprising number of undermotivated people will leave the scene when presented the "get shot" option by an armed person. The bad- ass- in training (with Oak Leaf Clusters) may hang around long enough to get shot... and the serious nut job with nothing left to lose (or who just did not get enough hugs as a child) may actually engage and continue to engage at great peril to his health. Yea- he makes a choice to die- not smart enough to cut his losses.

Statistics tell us that the bad guy is going to get missed on the first shot or two pretty often. If he takes cover... or sneaks away...game over. Plus... everytime you limber up that hogleg the freindlies and assets in the background need to be considered... it you need to move to make a shot and your bad guy leaves...game over. You win.
Good training tells us to move off the "X" and sometimes that breaks the assailant's focus... it may buy you enough time to run away... game over, you win.

"Has to die"? Most people require mutiple applications of lead to actually die from handgun bullets. 80% of shooting victims survive a one shot shooting event.

What we need those people to do is CEASE BEING a THREAT--- if they behave after we shoot them once- we are done shooting. If they happen to expire while improving their behavior- that the roll of The bad guy's dice. "I was in fear for my life" is a good answer. "I was in fear for my life... and he would not stop!" is even better.

I do understand the concept. It's part of the mindset. Never point a gun at anything we are not willing to kill or destroy. A gun comes into play when there is NO alternative. The flip side is- play nasty and run the risk of getting shot- maimed- killed.

Knives. Any person who has second thoughts about shooting somebody probably won't even consider slashing another human in self defense. Blades are up close, personal and messy. Truly a last ditch method.. and for defensive purposes if your that close somebody really screwed up.

Lot's of women who don't like hardware will learn Hand to Hand skills. Some who have H2H training learn early on it's a lot of work to beat the tar out of a rapist... you get sweaty and break nails. Many of those women make the addition of firearms after they figure out shooting is a lot easier than rolling in the gravel.

how did a thread for suggestions for my wife turn into this??? everyone has different opinions, lets not start fighting please...

Was wondering the same thing and not being privy to what will be accepted, I was in watch mode. I must say this is the first I have seen of this type of posting. Always thought this the grownup site myself. ;)

Sir,
My most sincere apologies. If that did indeed occur it was by complete accident on my part or possibly fate on yours. As you can see I was not, nor am responsible for what may or may not had occurred at some point in our distant past. That is if in fact our paths had crossed.

Well wish I could make it back up. Interesting matches and really good folks for the most part but the match costs me about 110.00 and I can not sustain that. Back to living through others experiences/posts. Really dig the match videos that get posted.

Well, I'm sorry guys. I didn't mean to cause a stir. That's just how I've been trained and feel very strongly about it. My opinion stands that the only time to pull a gun is if I am making the decision to pull the trigger and eliminate the threat by killing, because I am in fear of being killed. Take it or leave it, it wasn't meant as an attack. I'll go back under my rock.

no need to hide under rocks!!! just want everyone to respect opinions that differ from them!! healthy debates help everyone learn

I am nobody. I was shocked B-B thought he knew who I was. I think he may have mixed me up with some other good looking young guy lol

We know who you are Jerry. We don't get too many shooters from SW Oklahoma. Hope you make it back sometime soon and give us a chance to win our money back :)

No apology necessary. You gave your opinion about the issue, nothing wrong with that.

Well you locals really laid a whoopin on me the first of the 3 matches I shot up there. I got lucky when i went back and that was all there was to it. June might be my only match for the yr though I am trying to figure out how to make at least a couple more matches and I will keep your friendly invite in mind it the opportunity arises.

My brother has a flashlight that is also a taser it would be discreet & duel purpose.
Just a thought

Academy has taser's. There is a huge difference in a taser and a stungun which is what that flashlight is. Stunguns are a waste of your money

An explanation to go with a comment is much more informative. Care to expound?
Tasers launch probes on wires from 15 to 30 feet depending on the cartridge used, tasers also use muscle incapacitation not pain tolerance like stun guns which are also hand to hand as you have to make physical contact for them to "work" but as such only apply pain compliance which can be fought through with out stopping the attacker. Muscle in MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH harder to fight through its next to impossible but if the barbs dont make good contact then it doesn't work but thats where the best part of a taser comes from if you dont make good enough contact with the barbs and the attacker continues to close in you can use the weapon as a stun gun and push it to there body if at least one of the other barbs makes contact you still get muscle incapacitation. WWW.TASER.COM always has demonstration videos and there are dozens of youtube videos do you research. I just had to learn first hand and that was probably best.

Tasar units still involve the mechanics of shooting . Miss with a tasar... better have a Plan B.

Call me a fossil... but a few lessons in how to fight dirty, use of the expandable baton (wait, civilians cant use that in OK) or a sap ( cant carry that either) come in handy if you won't carry a gun or learn to use a blade for defensive reasons. Hell---they come in handy if you DO carry a gun and the gun is not appropriate for the situation or lost, broken,or whatever else goes wrong.

Tasars , pepper spray, stun guns ... all require training and fore thought to use in a pinch.

Whatever you decide ---if that method is a talisman your still gonna get hurt.

This still holds true. I never said rely on it but its a lot better then nothing MOST models of tasers have a laser and led light. the lasers are accurate if you can account for distance, Which I would say is the hardest part of using a taser.

H2H Knifes dirty fighting techniques are great but take dedication to self defense to learn. Important skills none the less

I know at least a dozen places that do free or cheap self defense classes for women, Take some of it with a grain of salt but some of its really good.

AWARENESS: DISTANCE: ESCAPE: These are the best solutions to any problem and can REDUCE the chance of getting harmed it should be one primary defense second is to fall back on the more active self defense training.

First off something about a stun gun scares me there's something about that sparking & popping sound it makes.
If a woman (a single woman not a mom protecting her kid) has a knife , baton or mace it would not overly worry me. Most men take more physical punishment/abuse from H2H training, wrestling/ horsing around, football and working out in the gym than an average woman can dish out. (In my opinion).
Back to the original topic his wife rides a bike. She has a flat tire we all ready know she will have her cell phone a stun gun in the other hand could easily keep a stranger out of her personal space while she decides if this stranger is a blessing from god sent to help her or a would be attacker. She does not have to threaten them but only hold the stun gun.
In the home were there is no wind pepper spray would be first choice.
Good luck Benjamin my wife does not care for guns either but I do believe she likes knowing they are there if needed.
Now if I could get her to quit throwing away the sale catalogs from MidwayUSA, Natchez...
