Which upper should I get?

I have been wanting another upper, and can't decide what to get. I have a 16" one now it is a YMH Diamond fluted barrel that I use for 3 gun every now and then, it's killed plenty deer coyotes, etc. It will hit 10" plates at 300 yards all day long, and has been super accurate. I have not really tried it past the 300 yard range yet. So my question is should I get a 18" or 20". Should it be 223 or 6.8? I don't know if the 6.8 is good out to 500 or not. If I get it in 6.8 then it would be cool to have another upper in a different caliber, but if the 6.8 is not good out to 500 it's no big deal I would just get another 223, and make it a upper for open 3 gun because when I go to shoot 3 gun for now on it will be in open. Or I can just go to the gun club and see if my 16" one I have now will be fine??? Hell I don't know what to do. So what's your guys opinion?

6.8 drops like a rock past 225-250 depending on barrel length. I have a 12.5" 6.8 that's great for deer inside 200.

Are you wanting something subsonic that would be quietly cool with a suppressor?

You can shoot 600 yards with your 16" .223 and if the barrel/ammo is accurate you can hit stuff too if you know your dope.

What are you really wanting the other upper for? Hunting, competing, suppressors? Use would dictate the caliber.

I think anything that uses the .277" bullet sucks! never liked them there are SO many better calibers to choose from I feel BUT that's my opinion. Feegee that 16" barrel in 223 will get you further than you think, is it the best choice for shooting stuff over 300 yards? well again there are better choices as all that stuff like velocity will drop off and you'll have to know your dope along with reading the wind a bit more than something with some velocity BUT what you have will work just may have to work at it a little.

Now why are you really wanting another upper? what ya going to do with it OR what do you expect to do with it? there are a lot of good choices these days to stretch the AR platform out there, the 6.5 Grendel or the even better 6 Grendel will let you stretch the range and give you some good bullet choices. Feegee, if your going to use it for hunting, especially long range, you need to look at the ranges you expect to shoot, and find a bullet that will work at those ranges you expect to shoot at for an ethical kill, then find the caliber you want to shoot. Any animal will expire quickly with a multitude of calibers if the shot placement is good.
My .338 Lapua is excellent at 1000 yds with the right bullet.
A 55 grain will never be effective at those ranges with any bullet.
I know you understand all of that, and my example was extreme, probably too much, but the point stands.

I really just wanted something to play around with, suppressor, hunt. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. I have a long range gun I am building now on the 22-250 platform but was also thinking about a magazine feed one also to mess around with since I sold my AR-10.
