It used to be that folks living within 25 miles of a nuke facility be it power plant, lab or whatever were given the option to get a free radiation kit that included meds, tape and plastic to cover windows and a host of other things that I don't remember.
I'm betting the Potassium Iodine was included.

I've lived my entire life about 25-30 miles from Davis Bessie nuclear power plant on Lake Erie
