Thinking about going this year and have always heard about, but not much, is it pretty much just a larger version of what we normally see, a bunch of MSRP guns and overpriced ammo? Or is it because it's so large that there is a little bit of competitive pricing going on?

I've been a dozen times or so. Its huge, and like any show, there will be overpriced items, but if your looking for something special, this is the show to attend.
Last year I needed a butt plate for a classic mod 12 win shotgun I was restoring. Nobody had one online, but I found one at the show.
Its easy to go into sensory overload after hours and hours of looking at guns, but that's why you go.
Hard to find items and the occasional bargain can be had.

Like so much of a bargain that if I were, lets say in the market for a complete upper half for an ar15, that I might be able to find one for a really good price, or should I just stick to the PSA sales when they have them?

The best thing to do is to check your sources before you go to get non-show pricing, and if possible save it to your smart phone. Most of the dealers will negotiate pricing.
If you can show them a cheaper price for the same item on your phone, you might just walk out of there with one.

I seldom see any good deals but there are a lot of neat guns that are fun to ogle.

Though SGAmmo used to have ammo that was competitively priced. With the way the market is now I have no idea if they still will.

It's worth going to at least once. When I went there was a badass pre-Civil War repeater rifle that was a fully functional prototype that was about 30 years ahead of it's time. It was incredible. Powder prices were very low, too, lower than anywhere I've ever seen. But that was 3 years ago or so.

Powder Valley's booth is also a good place to snag primers. Or it used to be. Again, the market is cray cray right now.

Also there's always a couple vendors with old Purdeys and Hollands that cost like $30,000 a piece. Have you seen what a $30,000 shotgun looks like?
