For the last year or so I’ve been looking at the Limited shooters and wondering how I can get in there and run with the “big boysâ€â€¦ Having the extra ammo capacity vs Production in USPSA is very appealing, but the few matches I shot as Limited Minor were quite the disappointment due to the Minor Power Factor penalty. For the most part I don’t like the Major vs Minor Power Factor argument and it has been what has driven me to IDPA vs USPSA. In reality, I believe that 9mm will solve any defensive issue that may come your way, so I don’t see the point in requiring Major Power Factor for any reason… But this is a game we’re talking about, so I need to understand the rules of the game and abide by them.
This brings me to my current venture in competitive shooting… How to get into USPSA Limited and shoot Major Power Factor without breaking the bank. Being a big fan of the M&P pistol, I started looking there to solve my issue. With the help of a local USPSA Grand Master, I was able to come up with a game plan that I hope will work for me. I ended up ordering a Smith & Wesson M&P40 Pro from Buds Gun Shop as the base of my build… As required by USPSA, any Major Power Factor pistol in Limited must be a minimum of .40 caliber. Why this is the case, I have no idea… In Open Division, you can have a 9mm that will make Major Power Factor, so this rule in Limited makes no sense to me. I’m sure there is some higher power than I that makes these decisions, but I’ve been left out of the loop on this one.
I have documented this build via video on YouTube. While I hate listening to myself, I figured this was the easiest way to document this build and cover all my bases… The following are the videos that I produced to help other shooters get into Limited â€" Major on a budget. I have yet to shoot a match with this new pistol, but I can tell you it’s shooting flawlessly. I’m very happy with the course of action on this build and how it shoots. I’ve put 600 rounds though it to date with very, very few issues. Those limited issues came in the first 30 rounds. Now that the gun has been broken in, it’s totally flawless. The recoil is just about equal with a 9mm +P load but I’m making Major Power Factor. I’m planning on the Mile High Showdown this week, to be my fist match to shoot this new pistol in. We’ll see how it goes, but I can tell you that a poor placement in the match will be due to my lack of skill and not a lack of a quality pistol.
