So I went into my local gunshop, decided to buy the new S&W Sheild in 40 S&W. The guy asks for my ID CCW, I hand it over, all is well so far. While the sales guy makes the call I walk around deciding if there is anything else I can spend money on to do my part to help the economy recover. As I'm browsing, the guy approaches me and tells me i've been rejected. I was pissed! I've literally bought 40-guns in the past 3-years and now, all of the sudden, I'm declined. What a horrible feeling!

Has this ever happened to you? Before you ask, no, I have not commited any crimes. I did not, and never do, give my SSN on the form. Maybe I should have? They said I can appeal but wtf do I appeal. How can I NOT be sold a gun. Should I try again tomorrow? What happens now? Am I totally eff'd?

I know a guy in Guthrie with a common name that gets kicked every time.

There is a process that the BATFE issues a pin number that sorts you out in the system.

In Florida do they still call into Tallahassee? If thats what denied you I am not sure how to remedy that.
When I lived down near Lake Worth-WPB I know the police showed up before the felon got to the parking lot when he tried to buy a gun...LOL... so it may be a glitch in the system.

I agree to try the SSN. Its the gubberment, and they have it already, so put it on the form.
I got pick pocketed years ago in Cozumel. My DL turned up in an accident in Fla. with a fake pic inserted from what I was told. Perp left his wallet in the car when he fled.
Took a lot of paperwork on my attorneys part to keep me from getting arrested on a warrent from Fla.

I was delayed for every gun I bought since then. When they put the SSN block in there, I've never been deny'd or been delayed since.
Jeff has the best solution. Get the PIN.

Give them your SSN as the computer will hit on similar names and date of birth. You might want to contact them and apply for the Unique Pin Number (ask your gun dealer for the contact info). The UPIN block on the form 4473 is in lieu of SSN and immediately takes the NCIC computer check to your info.

Might want to check yourself in the court network to make sure you don't have a warrant out for unpaid parking tickets or something. hehe :)

You can get a pin number with the FBI, I have info and the proper paperwork if you need help. What it allows you to do, instead of providing your ssn, you provide the dealer your PIN number and that is stored with NICS which green lights your sale. Assuming you don't have a reason to not be able to buy a gun. :)

PM me if your interested.

Here is a link to the FBI NICS Appeal process. I have had a couple customers that have been denied in the past that were actice Captains in the US Army and never had more than a speeding ticket. On theirs, the FBI customer service person said it wasn't criminal but could have been Identity theft related. I don't know if she was correct or just guessing. Either way, they aquired the UPIN number and it gets them right through every time. It works for people who get delayed everytime.
