Ok now that I have a Spikes lower on the way, lower parts kit, buffer tube, buffer, and buffer spring on hand how should I tackle the upper? I am thinking about a hunting setup for deer and coyotes maybe a 6.8 SPC II. I have been researching the information but wanted to know if anyone has done this. Will I save any money building the upper my self. I feel comfortable with everthing except the barrel headspacing. Can I buy a barrel with the feed ramp already installed and head spaced? Or should I bite the bullet and get the tools to do it all my self so I will have them on hand for my next build?

Thanks

If you plan on hunting anything with it, stamping it just doesn't make any sense. If I were making a hunting gun, it would be 20" or longer.

There is no headspacing when you assemble an upper. The barrels come with the barrel extensions installed. You torque the barrel nut to spec., toss in a bolt group and let her rip. Whether or not you save money depends on whose parts you buy.

By the way...the tools will cost you like $70. It's just an upper receiver block and a barrel wrench. That's it. Plenty of us around here have these and would be willing to help you out. No need to buy it unless you want to.

In my opinion....

unless your going with a much shorter barrel, stick with a 16 inch gun..

for precision shooting you will want a longer barrel..

if you want something to stamp do a shotgun....

but that's just my opinion..

I want a SB? but I can't find a rational use for one other than to impress my friends. I would stick with building for the need you will use the most. Although I have never done it it is fairly easy to assemble an entire AR. I plan to see how cheap I can do it this winter with used parts and stuff I have laying around.
