What are your theories on the phenomenon whereby a stripped lower receiver will sell instantly in the classifieds no matter what the price?

How much have you seen them go for? Even an overpriced (in my opnion) receiver shouldn't go for more than $125 after shipping and FFL transfer.

I do have one laying around though... :D

I have a hunch it has something to not having to fill out the transfer paperwork like you do when buying direct from a dealer. Some people don't want big brother to know how many. Evil Black Rifles they have.

Put an $80 lower in iwanna for $250, you'll sell it that day. My concern would be why someone would pay that much... maybe they CAN'T buy one through an FFL, i.e. they can't pass a NICS. Which makes me wonder, how long will FTF sales be legal. If something you bought at an FFL and sold FTF ended up getting confiscated at a crime scene, what legal responsibility do you have? Whether or not Big Brother is keeping an illegal database, a SN will still be traced to you. Is your word that you sold it to "some guy at a gun show" enough?

i allways have the buyer sign a bill of sale:i am a SC resident 21 years of age.i _____________ (my signature) transfer ownership of this firearm (make/model/serial#) to ______________(buyer name)

_____________buyer sign and date here
_____________seller sign and date here

Should there be something for the buyer, "and an legally purchase/own a firearm in SC" Is there some pre-printed Bill of Sale of a Firearm anyone knows of? I've heard there's not an official one, like for an automobile.

SC law says a private sale can take place if both are 18(long gun)(21 pistol)and are both SC residents the transaction CAN NOT TAKE PLACE IN PUBLIC! must take place on private property, you can do a private transaction at a gunshow but it must take place inside the show YOU CAN NOT BUY/SELL IN THE PARKING LOT.

Which brings us back to the classifieds. When it's not a gun, a public place (parking lot, etc.) seems the way to go. It seems you would have more grits than brains to meet someone you didn't know from Adam's housecat to go to someone's house or to have them come to yours to do a transaction of any sort. How is it done? Or am I just a yellow belly?

I have had a bunch of people come by my house to do a trade...

I feel that it is a lot easier on people to go to someones house. I have more problems meeting someone in a parking lot or somewhere like that...
I kind of feel people out on the telephone. If the hairs on back of my neck stand up...the deal is not done...If it feels good...do it.

Don't get me wrong...I have done it a lot of times, but, I prefer to have the deal on my home ground...

But, I probably do as much trading, buying, and selling as some gun stores...

Steve

i have always met somewhere in public, for Clist or anything.

I don't think it is wise to have people off CL come to your house.

a buddy was selling a 4 wheeler off CL, and the buyer came looked at it, and said "cant get money out of bank till morning"
called seller about noon, "i got the money, what time?"
seller said "not till after get off work at 5"
the buyer went the sellers house and was loading it up right after they talked, but the sellers Dad lived next door, and held them till cops arrived.

off the forum, may seem different, but not really.
people come & go off forums pretty quick.

or maybe i am just over-cautious.

I've done many private transactions and all of them have been in a Walmart, or other big box store parking lot. Never had a problem.

I am curious as to what part of the SC code makes it illegal to do a private transaction in public. I've not seen that part.

I can't find it here
http://www.sled.sc.gov/SCStateGunLaws1.aspx
but I have heard that statement made on this forum related to organizing a swap meet. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable can chime in with some specific legislation.

I am not aware of any South Carolina, Alaska, or Federal statutes or regulations prohibiting conducting an otherwise lawful face to face private transfer of a firearm. I'd love to see a citation of the alleged federal statute.

I personally never ever do any business at my home address. I also don't go into the homes of strangers. People on the internets do not need to know where I sleep at night. A PO Box is cheap to handle anything that goes through the mail, and for face to face type things (like firearms sales) a well lit, well trafficked big box store parking lot works well.

guys 2 people were arested in the parking lot at the metrolina gunshow for buying a firearm in public.thats enough for me not to do it

They may have been arrested during a public transaction, but that doesn't mean that they were arrested FOR the public transaction. They could have been arrested for selling to a prohibited person, transferring an NFA item like a SBR inappropriately, selling to a person from across state lines, or one of the many other technical violations that one can find themselves in when firearms are involved. Of course, Metrolina is in NC -- there may be some state law up there, but it wouldn't apply in SC. I imagine the sale could also run afoul of NC's pistol permit laws. That also would not apply in SC.
