A House panel on Thursday will take up a bill that would allow anyone who can legally own a firearm in the state to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

Kudos to Chief Lloyd. A senior law enforcement official who gets it (as many do. Sorry, OKC) but, more importantly, isn't afraid to say it out loud in public.

So why can't Oklahoma, one of the most conservative states there is pass a similar law?

In my opinion, Oklahoma is not a conservative state. It's a rare thing when I actually meet someone who is conservative outside of a group like this (re: gun owners who get the 2A). The state constitution was written during an era when progressivism, socialism, communism and other -ism's were appealling to the masses struggling to survive. As I've always said, everything before the word BUT in Article II, Section II-26 is negated by that three letter word meaning that Oklahoma doesn't recognize the right to bear arms. Of course I'm someone who thinks words have meaning. Say what you mean, mean what you say...

Section II-26: Bearing arms - Carrying weapons.

The right of a citizen to keep and bear arms in defense of his
home, person, or property, or in aid of the civil power, when
there unto legally summoned, shall never be prohibited;
but nothing herein contained shall prevent the Legislature from regulating the carrying of weapons.
