Its been sporadic so far. two weeks ago, they were sacking them up, but the last couple of days, its been pretty slow. One of our linemen from Enid has been over here for two days straight, and hasn't had much sucess.
It seems the worse the weather is, the better the bite. Cloudy days at early dawn is when they have been catching them, when they do bite.

white bass and/or wipers??

Both. Its a bad situation at Sooner. The Zebra Mussles have basically taken over the lake. Phyloplankton that is the bottom of the food chain, gets eaten by zooplankton, which gets eaten by shad, which gets eaten by the forage fish.
Zebra mussles main diet is phyloplankton. The food chain is broken.
As many as 150,000 shells can fit into one square meter.
Each mussle can produce 30000 to 1000000 eggs in one year.

If the shad have nothing to eat, they won't come and the forage fish won't come to chase them.
We have had bioligist from the ODW come to study the situation, and have targets in place to see what they will attach to , and what they will not.
5 years ago, I could have told you what day to come for the best fishing. Now, its up for grabs.
One thing we have noticed as well as the ODW. Blue cats always have a belly full of them.
But the blue cat population isn't growing as anticipated because of the rip-rap being cemented years ago to prevent erosion. No spawing areas.
OSU is currently studying this, but at the current time, there is no answer.
As a retired OSU educator, you might have some insite through your contacts?

i did not know the zebra mussel was in sooner. last time I fished it was ca. 10 ya. It was always hit or miss, usually a miss for me. But I got a good 2 mile hike
each time.

I then started flyfishing below Kaw dam. That was fun. I never knew what I would get. Bass, crappies, whites, channel cats, and a few gar that cut my line. Have not been there in a long time too. 50 feet walk out the back door is much easier than a 50 mile drive from stillwater. i recall a white marabou woolly bugger was productive in the rapids.

i should try boomer lake. i have been told channel cats are plentiful. love those filets!

2-nite I landed 4 crappies; 12 in. average. i cheated and used minnows. Yum yum to night!

I've never fly fished below Kaw. It sounds interesting. I typically fly fish the weed beds around lake Ponca. There are tons of Kentucky bass that the ODW wants taken out of the lake.

Yup, they never get over a pound, in this area, and eat the forage that a largmouth and others require.

You can get a nice fillet from them. :D
