Should Teachers Carry Guns On Campus?

What would be kind of cool is if the schools would get willing teachers CLEET armed security guard licenses, and employ them in the dual roles of teacher and armed security guard. Possible? I know it won't happen in a million years, but...

If I remember correctly Nevada considered similar legislation where teachers would be paid for training to carry on the job. I would reservations about doing this. I don't want to be a security guard on call at school but be able to defend myself and students while at school or on my way to or from school. If a real emergency arises I want to be able to respond appropriately not be the resource officer for the school. As a coach there have been situations where I would have felt much better about the safety of my athletes had I been armed.

For those who might want to do a little more reading on this topic:

The most scholarly research I've found is Pretend Gun-Free School Zones: A Deadly Legal Fiction by DAVID B. KOPEL published in Connecticut Law Review.
http://www.davekopel.com/2A/LawRev/Kopel-School-Zones.pdf About a 70 page read.

Also from Kopel on gun-free zones:

This issue should not be about just teachers, but staff and students as well. If they are 18 or older, it should be an individual decision to carry or not, open or concealed. If there are teachers that you would not trust with a firearm, they probably should not be teaching your children.

I would venture a guess that an employee who carries a gun in a defined situation would be held to a higher standard than those of us who are compelled to pay a fee to excercise our right to self defense.

That beeing said. Teachers using the CCW at work would probably be better if they had some CLEET required training. Dealing with an active shooter in a school crowded with kids is a lot more complicated that shooting a goon in a dark alley.
