intruders armed with handguns and long guns... met by the resident with an AR handy? Sounds like a rough 'hood. Or maybe there's more to the story. Sounds like he was more than prepared, maybe even expecting company. Just sayin'.

My AR stays loaded (5 round mag not one in chamber) close by in the house. My girlfriend is very good with it so it works to have it for her to use while I'm not at home.

The homeowner would have really had the upper hand if he had an AR and an assault rifle.

Sounds like it was a defense rifle not an assault rifle. These words the media choose to describe firearms - assault, weapon, etc. - all only apply if that is how the device is being used. A brick is an assault weapon if that's how you use it. That being said, I don't own any assault anythings, and luckily to date no defense tools, just sporting equipment.

Good for him. I keep a loaded AR mag for a rainy day but I'm also concerned about over penetration. I live in a sub-division with houses built on top of one another. I have my mag loaded with soft points so hopefully if I ever had to use it they wont travel too far out of my house.

5.56 is a better round for home defense that many other handgun ammo. Round selection is critical. What I mean about this is don't compare 5.56 penetrators to frangible 45acp.
The physic of what happens with the rounds when they hit something are more energetic with 5.56. What I mean by this is that 5.56 tend to destroy it's self when it hits something. It produces a massive wound cavity as well because of this action. On the flip side it will penetrate fewer walls than most handgun rounds.
