Saiga shotgun substitute?

I've wanted a Saiga 12 for a while. Neat gun, AK reliability supposedly, nifty drum mags for HD/funtimes.

Part of my looking into substitutes is the fact that the Saiga is probably real high on the list of AWB items/non-sporting purposes import bans. Has been for years. Part of it is that the unaltered sporter versions were $800 before the craze and now nigh-on unobtainable. IMHO that's high for any shotgun short of an AA12.

So if the Saiga 12 is off the table, what alternatives are there? I'd be looking for a semi 12 gauge, with preferences for a box mag and option for a pistol grip (but not like the pistol-grip-only mossbergs etc). HD as an option but probably mostly used as a goose/duck gun. Doesn't have to be tacticool.

I still kick myself (mentally) for selling my stepdad's Browning Auto 5, teflon coated with 32" barrel he used to take geese from the stratosphere. That was a good gun.

I wouldn't call it a Saiga substitute, but they are neat shotguns.

Not sure I like the open top feed tubes on the UTS but the ability to feed from both tubes would be good and I liked the ability to get into the chamber by simply lifting the cover.

However, at $1,695 for the UTS and $2,000 for the KSG I won't be buying either one anytime soon.

Way back when we were talking about one of these shotguns, I think it was the KSG. I had put up a thread on a prototype shotgun very similar to these called a Neostead. It was from South Africa and may have made a short production run as well. It was unique that the slide operated in reverse- push forward and then back to reload/fire. It had the same tube configuration on the top with 7 each I believe. It also had a carrying handle/rear sight on it and had select ammo tube option for it. Most likely it was the inspiration for both of these firearms.

The thread about it and one of these others is buried way back somewhere in the early Forum days, I think I will hunt for it! :geek:

EDIT:

Here is the thread I put up, nobody wanted to talk about it I guess...

I was wrong, it was 6/6+1 for ammo.

I wasn't looking for that sort of substitute :)

Thinking more like the SPAS-12 or Benelli M4, but with a box magazine. Or a good semi-auto with extendable tube mag.

Again, while I like the Saiga a whole lot, I don't like it $1000. Nor do I even want to know what the drums are going for these days.

A buddy in Columbia has a Saiga 12. Just had a custom finish applied. Check it out.

The Benelli M1 Super 90 is pretty decent. I can drag mine out for you to play with sometime Mike if you'd like.
You never know you might stumble across one for a song since the Saigas are all the rage now.

There is a new Russian semi-auto 12 gauge that is about to flood the US market. Once these start hitting the market expect to see a good bit of people dump their Saiga-12 to free up cash.
