Looks like someone tripped and discharged a shotgun into their chest. A terrible accident, obviously.
"Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target..."

I personally usually hunt in condition 3 with long guns. I'll chamber a round only in certain cases (sometimes in very stable stands, also when still hunting in dense terrain). May not be possible with certain types of shotguns though.

Terrible. Lessons learned:
1) With a break open shotgun, unloaded and action open. With a pump or auto, safety on.
2) Cell phones are distracting and thus dangerous when doing anything where risk is involved: driving, hunting, using power tools, working in an electrical panel, etc. Stop what you're doing before answering the phone. Even better turn the ringer/vibe off while doing certain things. An unexpected call can suprise you into an accident.

59 year old man doesn't have the common sense to shut the damn phone off while hunting???

"Hold on Bambi, I gotta take this call."

A senseless and avoidable tragedy, it just reinforces the need for firearms safety education.

Just shows what a moment of distraction can cost you. likely was pulling the weapon towards himself and the trigger snagged on something and discharged. That is complacency at its highest, pointing a weapon at yourself without checking if its unloaded first.

with just those facts i dont buy it. shotguns are long. when could the bbl be at his chest AND the trigger get pulled?

Like a gentleman in Hanahan pulling a shotgun across the front seat of his truck and discharging a full load into his chest a number of years ago.. . it only takes a moment of thoughtlessness to screw-up.

yeah, after thinking about it thats what i came up with, pulling it towards yourself, saftey off. i cringe though thinking about my muzzle being pointed at me. not the place to be.

lets all of us be really careful, ok?

They're are a lot of good reasons to keep your phone on while hunting.

A few,

We use them instead of radios for safety.
We communicate after we hear shots fired to check condition of animal/hunter.
I have a child- if wife really needs me, I come out of the woods.
Last but not least- we're coming down in 20 minutes, get breakfast ready.
