Question About a Trust

If I create a trust naming my sons trustees or officers or whatever they would be called.
When I die would the items need to be transferred or would they simply continue as they always had?

When my Dad passed his was just taken over by me. It's my understanding that as long as you state in your will what is to be done with them your good.
