Guys,

I need to get better gas mileage out of my truck. Anybody have personal experience with any of these diesel computer programmers or chips?

Be very careful. A friend of mine was dicking around with the CAN system in his car and managed to brick his ECU.

I have an '09. From factory I was getting 10mpg. After I cut out the catalytic converter, drilled holes in the bottom of the air box and isntalled the XRT Pro (http://www.hsperformance.com/xrt-pro/), I now get about 16 in the city and 17-19 on the highway. I probably could get better on the hwy if I kept it under 90!

That's the kind of numbers I'm looking for. Do u think just adding a programmer will do it or do I need to open up the exhaust and intake to get things flowing better?

exhaust will help alot. On the intake side really unless you upgrade our turbo the factory intake system is going to flow all the air you need. On the exhaust side of things you can go with a DPF back system or a DPF delete system. If you delete the DPF you have be sure the programmer you buy has a DPF delete option.
Check this out if you want to do the delete

Do a SCT Tuner with custom tunes or an H&S Mini max or black max tuner http://www.hsperformance.com/

I've used both when I had my 09 F250. Both were solid but I enjoyed the H&S a little better.

The stock intake is fine on that series. but opening the exhaust and a DPF delete (Depending on your warranty) will give you a significant boost in your fuel mileage
