This is my everyday Jacket. It is good till you get down in the teens. It is windproof but allows plenty of mevement, Also somewhat water resistant as well. I love it and wear it 90% of the time over winter. it is very versatile.

I have that same jacket dubs. I've had it for several years and it still looks great.

I recently dropped the coin for a TAD Stealth Hoodie. Its a lot of money but damn its nice. Pockets everywhere, wind proof, water resistant, warm, and it has a hood! That's the only thing I didn't like about my North Face, no hood.

The Stealth Hoodie is my 3rd TAD jacket, I've got an old Explorer LT (lite) that is perfect for windy days or mid-warm/cool days. I've worn it from 50 degrees to 70 degrees with just a t-shirt under it. Its black so it heats up pretty good on anything above 70.

I also have the TAD Ranger Hoodie. Its like a full zip sweatshirt that is ultra warm. Has pockets everywhere just like the Stealth and Explorer. I can layer it under my Stealth but its a bit too bulk under my Explorer.

TAD makes great gear if you can swallow the price. The reason they're so expensive is the quality is exceptional. They have very high quality control and only make their products in small batches. Brand loyalty is a must as the items are released seasonal and there are a bunch of gear queers that snatch a lot of it up with ours of its release.

I have one of those in Black and Brown. They are pretty nice. I don't recommend wearing them during a 3 day class and rubbing the right sleeve against your grip tape for 1300 rounds. It iwll wear a hole in it.

I bought a pair of 5.11 shorts for liek $17 from Sportman's Guide and I don't really care for them. I liked the pocket situation but the inseam is a little short and too tight (UPS man shorts) and the wide belt loops take up much needed room for the velcro on my CR speed to interact.

That is exactly why I got some Columbia cargo shorts instead of the 5.11s or any of the leo style. Seems like whoever used to make polyester gym-teacher shorts jumped into the leo market.

LMFAO!

I talked to 5.11 and they said they were coming out with a pair of shorts with a 11" inseam. Hopefully that will make them a little more cool.

Check into the Woolrich Elite Tactical shorts. Much roomier in the crotch and plenty of length. The pockets on them are better than 5.11's too.

After years of having to go with whatever Uncle Sam bought me....my wife scored me a TAD Stealth Hoodie for Christmas. Great kit. Sturdy, well sewn, multiple pockets, warm, dry, and light. USGI Gortex isn't bad, but this rocks.

I love my TAD Ranger hoodie. I also have that NorthFace Apex jacket. It's great too.

Anyone else have different patches they wear on their TAD gear?

I have Velcro (or hook&loop as the ATAS guys say) and I sometimes wear a TAD patch and a LaRue patch. My GF bought me the LaRue/TAD Gear Ranger hoodie and the LaRue patch package thingy. She's my fiancé now if that tells ya anything. I bought the Stealth this year and it is awesome. It's by far my favorite jacket. Wanting to get a predator hardshell soon

I sort of go to Columbia first on everything lately, mostly because they make most everything in tall sizes. They seem to be on par with North Face, etc, but less expensive. Not inexpensive, but less expensive.

^That is my daily outerwear, for basically 0* - 50* F temps.

+1 on TAD I have several this stuff is top notch and very hard to get.

I'm kinda just getting into all this "tactical" stuff so I haven't thought much about outerwear except for shoes. In my line of work I wear out shoes very quickly (carpet cleaner). I had been buying cheap shoe every 2 - 3 months, including a pair of "tactical" style workboots from Wal-Mart ( I'm cheap, what can I say?). Well, long story short is I finally dropped some serious coin (for me) on a pair of good boots - ATAC II's from 5.11 in the 6 in. side zips. I loved them for the first 6 months, till they started falling apart. I blew out the sides where my feet rubbed on them. Found out ATAC means As Tactical As Crap. Kinda figured they would have lasted a little longer since I paid $120 for them. BTW, the "tactical" boots from Wal-Mart were $55 and lasted almost 2 yrs. I went back for more but now they are steel toed. Never mind...

For the cost conscious, you can try the military all-weather gear.

I've used the typical issue gore-tex pants in combination with the fleece liner and thermal underwear WELL into sub zero temps, then I used the same jacket and pants for springtime wet weather gear. The Generation III ECWCS kit can be had in pieces so you don't have to buy the whole kit. Assuming you can't find all the parts at your local surplus joint, they're all over eBay.

PROS: Cheap, effective, versatile(modular).
CONS: noisy, only comes in woodland or desert pattern.

It seems the .MIL is starting to use commercial stuff more; the stuff is starting to remind me of camouflage columbia gear. The USMC ILBE rucksack is actually an Arc'Teryx bag. $100 on eBay in MARPAT vs $500 commercial?
