Open Carry in a Place of Business

Another good reason to carry and be aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are or what you are doing. I prefer carrying openly, myself.

Carrying is certainly a good idea in a business like that. In fairness, the story didn't say she didn't have a gun. It is possible she decided not to get into a gun fight for whatever reason.

The Gemnological Institute of America has a no-gun policy when it comes to jewelry stores. If I had the book in front of me, I'd quote it directly. But the gist of it is this: guns are violent, and escalate armed robberies to more violent incidents; therefore, do not pull a gun on a robber.

At my store, we carry openly, but we do business behind a counter. Most jewelry stores have associates that walk beside the customer, so open carry wouldn't be a safe procedure for them (a criminal could snatch the gun from their hip).

Still, I know of stores that sawed-off 12 gauges mounted underneath the counter pointing outward, just in case.
