Here's how the story unfolds:

My wife sends me a text message around 2 o'clock today, saying that our neighbors to the right of us came knocking, "just to meet their new neighbors!" But the thing is, they weren't interested in small talk, they were only scoping the place out, wondering if we were home. As they were leaving, they had the gall to ask my wife, "So when is your husband going to be home?" She told them, "In a few minutes."

Well, I don't check the message until and hour and a half later because I was busy working (go figure: one works whilst he's at work). So I call her, and I tell her that when my manager gets back, I'm heading home.

So I go home, and we talk about the situation. We end up taking pictures of the serial numbers of everything that has serial numbers in our house, and putting those in a file on a flash drive. I go back to work when everything starts to simmer down at home.

When I get back home, my neighbor behind us is yelling and cursing on his phone. My wife has our little 4 month old in the car at this point (she's helping out for VBS at church this week), when he asks us if we seen/heard anything. We explained what had taken place earlier, and my wife asks if she should stay. I told her, "No, I got this." My neighbor and I talk about the situation, and he tells me that it's probably someone he knows. I ask him if he knew the folks that lived beside us. And he said, "Yep, cause she asked me where she could buy some crack!" Oh boy.

A few hours passed, and I have a knock at my door. Officer Wilson asked me if I was around, and I told him that I wasn't but my wife was. Then he asked for our names, and I showed him my CWP (I had my gun on me, of course, so why not?), and spelled my wife's name. He asked if we felt safe, and I told him, "Nope, not really, not with all the drug activity and the police cars in my front yard every other week." He asks if my wife had protection, and I assured him that she did.

A few more hours passed, and my neighbors (the ones who were robbed) came and thanked me for what I had disclosed to them and to the police: it had led to the thief's arrest!

She not only needs to have protection but needs to know how and when to use it.

This reminds me of the video C_Carson put up a while back about a guy stalking her. It's a shame we have to arm ourselves in our own neighborhoods. I'm glad to hear some people are more comfortable being safe and prepared than sorry and victimized. Even though some of our elected officials want us to feel differently.

I had a neighbor behind me and a LEO living next to me (different town). The neighbor behind me was a drug dealer. The LEO and I always use to talk about him and he said "He's being watched'. Turns out they took 3 years worth of watching. I told him to tell them that they could set up in our back bedroom. Great vantage point.

Just glad we didn't have our daughter then.

I'm glad they caught the idiots but reading that statement I would be thinking about moving.

Oh, we've had plans on moving ever since we had people knocking on our doors asking for a "Mitchell." Lease is up in September.

Wow. That sounds like a bad neighborhood. It makes me wonder if there is something online where you can report a neighborhood for future renters/home buyers. Perhaps a business opportunity.

I might have missed this details, but the people that knocked, where they actual new neighbors, or people posing as new neighbors?

I recently moved and had some new neighbors drop by to introduce themselves, but I already knew where they lived so we had a nice chat. I was OC at the time and they didn't seem to mind, so I think we will like this neighborhood :D

I hate to say it, but the safe option is to get out. If you try to DO SOMETHING like set up a neighborhood watch to drive the crime out, well we all know what kind of grief that can put you through (think Trevon). And don't let them know you're armed unless you plan on never leaving; they'll just wait until you're not at home the go for your guns. Leave big dogs loose inside your house.

They were indeed our actual neighbors, but come to find out, they were accomplices. The crooks live on the other side of the railroad tracks, literally: we live above the Victor Hill area in Greer, below Sunnyside (where the criminals live). We had no idea that this side of town was that bad; otherwise, we would have never considered the area. And, supposedly, there is a neighborhood watch present, but I think someone just put those signs up as a weak attempt to prevent crime.

After asking my neighbor if he had any news, he told me that the thieves beat feet and are no longer in the area at the moment, so I think we'll be safe from them for a while. Nevertheless, we WILL NOT renew our lease with our landlord.

I grew up in Greer, just like every city, and where I live now, you can live in a good area, but about 4 blocks away is....bad. Thus far we've had 2 things stolen out of our yard. Motion sensor flood lights going up as soon as I can find an electrician who doesnt want my entire bank account... anyone know a good one? Spartanburg...

Glad to hear they caught the bad guys! Take back your neighborhood. It is easier than you may think. Get together with neighbors, call the cops neighborhood watch team, and organize against the bad guys. Call the cops ANYTIME something suspicious takes place. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Take pictures, record tag numbers as they come and go - LET THEM SEE YA do these things. Set up motion detectors that make noise in your yard. Set up motion detector water sprinklers in your yard. "this helps with Jehovah Wittinesses also) :P Be sure to invite the 7th day guys to tour your neighborhood. Take (Dollar store) cookies to their house as an offering and ask a lot of questions. Late at night shout your shotgun at an angle so that the bird shot lands on their house. Get a cowboy rig and wear it at home ALL THE TIME inside and out. That crazy John Wayne impersonator is a great deterant. The more presser they get, the more likely the will move away. Stand your ground. Do not be a victim.
