After about round number 20 of a two day rifle class with Red Neck Tactical's Kurt Miller I had a round fail to fire during a drill. I thought maybe I ran out of ammo and the bolt didn't lock back. So I changed mags rapidly and racked a fresh round into the chamber. That next trigger pull was one I will never forget! :surprise:

I heard a big BANG and felt a huge POOF of air in my face. I instantly closed my eyes and tossed the rifle away from me. I suffered two tiny cuts on my face. My right eye was a little irritated but not as irritated as both eyes were the next day from dust in 25-30 mph winds. The shooter next to me took a piece or three of debris in the right arm and back which drew a little blood but neither of us was injured seriously thankfully.

The scope and mount still were still attached to the picatinny rail and were blown about 5-8 feet forward. The upper is completely destroyed. I should be able to save the hand guard but I will need a new barrel nut and collar. The comp and gas block should be OK too. Surprisingly the lower receiver is still in good shape despite the mag being destroyed when it was blown out the gun. My scope and mount appear to be OK as well.

After talking to the rifle manufacturer we think what happened was the round that didn't go off had a damaged case neck (as well as some reason why it didn't fire) which caused the bullet to get pulled out of the case and stuck in the chamber. I racked in a fresh round and it chambered but the bullet that was left in the chamber pushed the new bullet down into the casing causing a BIG problem when I pulled the trigger.

Lessons learned...ALWAYS WEAR YOUR RUDY PROJECT GLASSES WHEN SHOOTING and ALWAYS DOUBLE/TRIPLE CHECK YOUR RELOADS.

What is wrong with the barrel nut and collar? Did you reload the ammo, or was it reman ammo from a company? In other words, is this on you or is somebody going to replace your expensive parts?

That is really scary! I am also very glad that everyone is ok. Lots of lessons to be learned here.

You guys know when you're watching a war movie and someone has a grenade go off beside their head? That stunned, expressionless face? That's exactly what Mr. T looked like, because, well, he had a grenade go off beside his head.

I was glad no one got hurt over that also. It looks like the AR platform does a pretty good job of protecting the shooter, as long as you're not hanging onto the magwell.

Glad everyone is okay. That really sucks!!

I had a 1911 slide that failed to close and blew up on me. It took me awhile to stop flinching after that.

Glad you were able to tell us about it dude! I've been loading for many years and things happen don't care who you are and I've had my share.

Fella's safety glasses are a good thing and when you get to running as fast as some of these guys when something does something strange stop and take a look! I've seen a mess of squib loads in pistol shooting might be why I don't load for pistol. Later,

Kirk

Holy mother of gun malfunctions!
Your lucky as hell to have escaped with the minor injuries. It could have been much worse.
I found a .223 round at our range the other day with the round pushed back into the case neck, almost exactly as you described.

what barrel were you using?

during long range rifle school there was a midwest city officer using a savage he had purchased from an ok county deputy. The chamber was cut just a touch short and when he ejected an unfired round the bullet would stay in the chamber while the brass ejected and the powder would fling everywhere.. this was with factory loads...

regardless this could happen to anyone... no bang there would be no reason to believe there was an obstructed barrel.. its a stark reminder that we are shooting "firearms" and that murphy is a real cat lady sometimes...

I'm glad your ok and the lesson to be learned here is that it can happen to anybody, even with factory ammo...

i have noticed that my rcbs small base die set will distort some of the necks of the cases.. I have been meaning to call rcbs and visit with them about the issue...

this is the pic of the round I found at our range as earlier posted. It sounds eerily similar to the situation you posted originally.

Well if you're gonna blow up a rifle you want it to be a JP. These guys went above and beyond what I consider good customer service. Here is the new upper the sent me and they refused to take any money for it. I couldn't be happier!
