I shot the Tactical Steel Challenge today at OCRGC ~225 rounds of ammo today through my M&P 9 Pro 5"(Total round count close to 2k) and had two failures to eject, which resulted in a double feed. This is the third time I've had this issue in probably 300 rounds since buying the gun used.

What is the expected life of the extractor in the M&P series? Do you think a cleaning of the extractor channel is needed at this round count? I watched a youtube vid of what it takes to remove the extractor and it appears to be a bear to get the factory pin out, one guy claims to have bent a punch getting it out. Any advice on removal of the factory pin if you've done it?

Am I correct in saying the M&P extractor is not able to be "tuned"?

I'd at least like to get it out and clean/inspect it and see what if anything that does for me before dropping $45 on the Apex extractor via Brownells. Is anyone else running the Apex Extractor? How does it work for you?

I use dental picks to clean out the gunk from the extractor about every 500 rounds and don't have issues after a little over 3000 rounds so far.
I hear great things about the Apex extractor though so you may just go that route.

I was hoping to be dissuaded from the Apex extractor. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Looks like I'll be investing in the Apex Extractor.

I went through AP1 shooting my 147 lead USPSA loads without a hitch. Factory bone stock extractor. That's probably 1300 rounds. That's the longest run without cleaning but I've never had an issue with it, I generally clean it every 300 - 800 rounds.

Edit to add: My gun has around 7000 rounds through it.

At work we have a "small parts and pins" guy so I trusted him to remove the extractor retention pin from the slide this morning when I got in. He also polished the pin up a bit so I should be able to get it out myself next time. He got it out with a punch that he custom made and holy schnikes was it dirty in the extractor channel. So much so that I would not be surprised if the range of motion of the extractor was being limited by the amount of carbon buildup underneath it. I will hold off on ordering the Apex part until I can get some time on this and see if the cleaning was enough. Physically the extractor itself looked fine, no excess wear or damage of any kind was noticed.

I will be disappointed if the cleaning was not enough to fix the issue.

How old is the gun? The M&P9s used to have some well-known extractor issues but I thought S&W fixed them. My compact has issues with WWB but my full-size has been fine.

I have no idea how gunked up my extractor channel is. I clean under the extractor hook with a toothbrush, and then sometimes when I feel like it I hose out the slide with brake cleaner.

LOL I was going to say this verbatim, down to "147 lead."
