I guess it really depends on your definition of affordable.

When I started looking into it, I chose a White Oak Armament 6.8 barrel and planned on getting the headspaced bolt with it. Your talking about $336 for those plus shipping. The other parts are interchangeable.
So, whatever lower assembly you want ($400 to 600), an upper ($100 to $200), gas block and tube ($40ish), a forearm (cheap to $250) and a carrier group ($65).
You could get into a good 6.8 rifle for $900 to $1200.

Too bad you sold your AR, you could have converted it over for $340.

Yea - well I think building one from scratch just sorta sounds fun. I'll probably start with an Essential Arms lower - affordable and Louisiana Product - and go from there...

Do you like the 6.8 caliber?

I love it. That was my plan with my SPR, but I got that Kimber and it was put on hold.

I'll eventually get it done cause I think it's a pretty exciting little round.

if you're planning on making it into a match gun, I'd recommend getting a two-stage trigger setup for it. costs more, but I love mine. I use the Armalite tactical 2-stage; http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=10309000
I tried the Rock River one, but didn't like it half as much.

See, dammit, now you've made me start thinking about converting mine again. Can't do it... must resist...

Id think that the ammunition alone will knock affordable out of the equation.

Also, there is a magazine capacity disadvantage if you intend this to be a 3gun rifle.

If you change your mind on building one I can get you a complete 6.8 Bushmaster upper for $520.00 out the door. M4 , Flat Top , Chrome lined , with one mag and bolt and carrier. This is the one I am currently using and I love it. I can actually get you any brand you want but those are what I am getting the best deal on right now.

Oh yeah , Heres a pic and I can probably have one within 1 to 2 business days from order.
