I have been wanting to have a long range rifle for target shooting, etc. and have looked at the Remington 700 SPS Tactical. Has anyone experience with it?

Everyone wants a Remmy 700 in .308 - I wanted one too - I imagine you are just wanting a bolty (not sure what cal you want) - Are you planning on doing anything other than just hitting targets at long distances

Here is my one piece of advice, DON"T DO WHAT THE GREATER POPULATION DOES AND THAT IS TO BUY A NICE RIFLE AND SKIMP ON THE OPTICS - ESPECIALLY FOR LONG DISTANCE SHOOTING! You need to budget for the optics as well!

+1.

I don't know anything about that Remington. Have you checked out the FNH FNAR? ( :D )

Don't over look the savage 10fp hs precision stock. The accu trigger is sweet and out of the box accuracy is for real.
Good glass is a must but if your on a budget there are some pretty decent scopes out there for 300ish. I have one and have no problem making 800+ shots if I do my part.

Save some money by getting the Savage, and put that towards an optic. Better yet, find a high quality optic you like, buy that then figure out what gun you want under it.

I have a Savage 10 in .22-250 Ackley and a Rem 700 in .308 http://www.boomershooter.com/forums/index.php?/topic/780-my-2-long-rangers/ and I'm in the process of puting together a Savage 110 in 7mmRM. Very very true on the don't skimp on the glass for precision shooting. IMHO the great setups for long range would be http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/411540287 It come's with a good stock and have never heard of the 5R's not shooing great out of the box. Toss on some good glass and you've got a shooter. My other option would be the Savage 10 FCP McMillan or the HS Precision model.

I plan on getting good glass, but may have to wait a little and use what I have. I have not looked at the Savage yet but will give it a look over.

My favorite things about both

Remington 700 - A LOT of aftermarket upgrades and goodies

Savage 10 - you can rebarrel and change caliber with a few tools and headspace gauges in your own shop or garage.

I have a recommendation, if you want good glass buy it FIRST! don't ask me how I know this but if you get the rifle your just going to settle with a scope you can afford and then go shoot and 2 years down the road you will still have the same scope on that rifle.

A good friend of mine wanted to get into LR shooting after a couple of trips to the range with my rifles he found out you CAN hit things further than 300 yards :-) well he had enough money to get a full on custom and ask me WHO to talk to about building him a rifle I just told him to get a Savage in 308 and a good scope! we have put a B&C stock on it and other than that that's it, he has a Savage 10 with heavy 24" barrel, Leupold MK4, B&C stock granted not my choice on scope but hey he likes it. We have spent some time at the range and 2 years ago I get a call opening morning he got his buck at 335 yards, 1 shot and DONE! made me feel good.

You don't have to spend large amounts of money to shoot long range! you will have to spend some time behind that rifle while the drop charts are easy to figure out that wind you will learn to really hate.

Do you reload? if not that would be something I would look into. Later,

Kirk

Savage also makes a 10 FCP with a McMillan stock. I love mine. The only thing I've had done to it is bedding the action in the stock. Take a look at Zeiss Conquest for optics. I got a 6.5-20x with target knobs for less than $900 new on eBay. With a 20 moa base, you will be good out to 600-800 yds. I had to use 20 moa ring inserts to make it to 1,000 yds with a 175 gr .308 Berger bullet.
