Dear Mr. Bales:
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for a contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Eric Holder. I certainly appreciate your input on this important matter and the opportunity to share my thoughts with you.
On May 3, 2012, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa circulated a draft contempt order against the Attorney General for refusing to fully cooperate in the Operation Fast and Furious investigation. In addition, Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Cantor, Majority Whip McCarthy, and Chairman Issa sent a letter to the Attorney General on May 18, 2012 demanding full cooperation with the ongoing investigation into this operation and the death of Agent Brian Terry. The committee has also held multiple hearings, conducted two dozen transcribed interviews with fact witnesses, sent over 50 letters to the Department of Justice (DOJ), and issued the DOJ two subpoenas for documents. However, despite these efforts, Chairman Issa contends that the DOJ has continued to withhold critical information and documents.
As you may know, I am proud cosponsor of H. Res. 490 which expresses the sense of the House that it has no confidence in Mr. Holder due to his involvement in Fast and Furious and withholding of information. You can be assured that like you, I believe that the DOJ and all Administration officials involved must be held accountable for their actions and will closely monitor the investigation as it continues to unfold.
