Get a tablet, if you can make the switch. Only problem would be you not knowing anything about computers and needing to back-up data to a host-PC on your home network.

that is what my little sis is for... she knows how to do that..

As far as I'm concerned, if you're not buying a Macbook or Macbook Pro then you might as well move to a 3rd world country. I've been using Mac for about 7 years now and will never purchase another Windows PC.

Acer is a pretty solid value in laptops. I've also had a couple Dell refurbs that I didn't hate.

I'm on my 2nd Macbook but Apple is the HK of computers. A lot of what you're paying for is the name and the right to be a snotty elephant dung to people who don't have stuff that's as cool as yours.

well i am cool with being part of a 3rd world country.. with all the extra cash i save i can buy more ammo.. also why would i spend more money to buy a mac to surf internet and type word docs?? it is cool, ever since showering in gym class i have never been the cool kid, so i will just buy my 2nd rate laptop and cry myself to sleep..

like the acer suggestions... this one looks nice, large screen, windows 8, touch screen, all for under 700

Go check out Tigerect.com and Microcenter.com. Both of those places usually have really good deals on laptop and full systems. I've bought most of my stuff the last few years from one of them.

Because you'll never have to worry about all the spyware and viruses you can pick up while surfing the web. :)

My friend is always giving me crap about spending the extra money to buy a Mac and how he can get a similar windows laptop for a lot cheaper. For me it's like comparing a rusted out ford pinto to a Ferrari. I like never having to work on my laptop because everything just works.

i visit like 10 sites on the internet... so not a problem at all.. but if i ever have to pay 1500 in repairs to my laptop due to a virus, then I will switch to a mac because then it will even out..

Not sure what they cost, but we use the IBM Lenovo t series laptops at work and they stand up pretty well. Most of the people that use them are constantly on the road so they get beat up.

My wife had a dell several years ago and it was a total pos. the battery holder broke after just a couple months and went down hill from there. There was a lot of black tape holding that thing together. Lol. I'd recommend staying the hell away from those if you can.

Step 1: use Chrome instead of Internet Explorer
Step 2: quit clicking on emails that promise to make your cucumber bigger
Step 3: Enjoy your virus-free Windows box

The how the hell am I ever going to help the Nigerian Price smuggle his millions of dollars out of the country?!

Last time I really used a PC at home, XP was still the common OS and it was really vulnerable. I still remember being in the process of rebuilding my workstation and a virus coming in while I was downloading Windows updates. I wasn't surfing the web, hadn't installed any software, just sitting there doing updates. I can't remember what that worm was called, but it was a pretty big deal for it's day.

We use Windows 7 on the PC's at work, but they're on a closed network with a special build setup by the company so we don't really worry about that stuff there. I think Windows NT 4.0 was the last time we had any kind of serious virus there. lol

The last really big worm that used that kind of unauthenticated remote exploit that I can think of was Conficker, but that vulnerability was patched in 2008. Not that there aren't a ton of unpatched boxes out there still but I digress.

I don't want to write a 2-page-long explanation but basically XP was in service longer than it should have been, and after a few years it was really showing its age. Microsoft did a pretty good job at securing Windows 7. People still find vulnerabilities (just like they do in MacOS and the other *nixes) but between some OS redesign magic and the default anti-virus you're pretty well protected.

Let me help you out........................Windows sucks

PS: Benjamin, buy THIS

I'm selling my MacBook. I got a new MacBook Air and if you want something to do what you're talking about my white MacBook would work for you.

We're a PC house here. Use Chrome, block the elephant dung out of ads, and don't respond to Prince Mumbala of Nigeria and you'll be fine.

It's really not that hard, the vast majority of viruses that my little sister and mother have gotten came from clicking on stupid crap they see. Block the ads for them and all of a sudden that can't get in trouble cause they can't see the stupid crap.
