The plant has been modernized. They are getting out more ammo with less people.

ATK and the Army have invested $400 million, Kidder said, to increase the plant’s efficiency in producing ammunition of various calibers.

New technology targets the long practice of operating machines across two floors of the plant. Teams of employees will oversee equipment and monitor instruments and gauges rather than having a separate team for each production line, Kidder said.

Maybe they have an aging staff and are giving them an easy way out before they throw them out. With new technology comes the use of computers and there are a lot of older workers that struggle to catch on.

The plant is 20 minutes from my house so I know it needs to be modernized. Just seems odd to me for some reason. The plant is huge and literally has separate buildings for each caliber.

this, it always sucks to hear about people losing jobs..

You would think with the increase in the demand they would be expanding production to meet the demand by adding jobs. That is exactly what I was thinking. Dennis, if it is the way you explain it then I completely agree.

It's not a really good idea to hire a bunch of people to meet demand for this sort of thing, because once the bubble bursts you have to get rid of them.

That is what temp services are for.

Hey, let's hire that cute 20-year-old temp chick and put her in charge of this million-plus-dollar ammunition manufacturing equipment that churns out thousands of rounds per hour of wartime boom-booms. Nothing can go wrong, right?
