I don't think so.
My uncle named me after someone he liked in Bob Wills entourage.
I would not have picked being called Buddy.
For instants my present wife and I date 3 months and I ask her
to marry me and after saying yes she said "I guess I need to
know your "real" name if we are getting married.

Too late! My son is actually Raymond, IV but we call him Buddy (lately we call him different names that aren't so nice but that's a different story).

The nickname comes from my great grandpa who started calling my dad that when he was born. As in that's going to be my little fishing buddy.

My son used to be amazed when we would be shopping somewhere and a cop would come up and say "How ya doin' Buddy". He'd get all serious and ask "How did he know my name?"
