she thinks that picking up hitchhikers is some crazy risky thing... i am saying her fear is unfounded, since i am picking them up during the day and only on major highways (I40, I35, etc...) any stats or info that i can point to?? anything will help....

I kinda agree with the wife - but you got a gun on your hip, so things are a bit different - also, I seem to be approached by the weirdos at night, and they still turn out to be safe at times (even with my large knife in my pocket)

half naked female ones are the worst - I always end up with less money in my wallet after the ride and even more money out of pocket with my Co-pay to fix the burning sensation.

guys i need some evidence!!! trust me i use my judgement, but i need something more concrete than JP and taymoor think it is OK!!!

The evidence you seek doesn't exist. I know of no venue which tracks crimes committed by hitchers.

Would I ever pick up a hitcher? Dunno. I do know that I tend to keep strangers at a safe distance. And the front seat of my car is waaaay to close. The backseat is even worse.

Anyone ever been in a life or death fight inside of a car? It sucks.

Picking them up during the day is just as riskyas night. Imo. All hitcher are at some point during the day out at night! Sadly have to side with the misses. World is not the same as it was even 10 yrs. Ago. Dont be fooled by someone wearing a cast and holding crutches.

Years ago my Dad and I were driving home and saw a guy hitchiking with his thumb out standing beside a car on the side of the road. Dad stopped to give him a ride and asked if he was having car trouble. He answered no that wasn't his car, he was just standing beside it.

Made us both feel a little uneasy about that. We only took him about 6 miles into town, he thanked us and we went on.

Here is the deal. Not all are bad people.
I worked with a guy that spent time in Big Mac for rear ending a highway trooper on new years eve.
When he got out, and came back to work, he wore his prison jacket, pants, etc. I see people on the highway with the same clothing, so I figure they got their discharge, and are on the road to somewhere.

Dangerous? Who knows.

I've picked up two in my life. One was a man and women in NJ during a terrible hail storm, and an other around PC that was a native American walking down the road at -10F. Both times it was a non-event, but I had major firepower in my hand on the off side.

Goggle what your interested in, and its kind of scary what you'll find.

Ok, first we are missing a really good story...

Secondly, I have only picked up one hitch-hiker. I was on my way home from work, about 5 in the afternoon, it was at least 100 degrees. He was a really old dude. He told me a story, about how he was from somewhere, and trying to get somewhere else, and was supposed to meet a guy across town if he could get there. I took him there, and got him a big cup of water along the way.

Couple weeks later I saw the same guy, on the other side of town, in the same clothes trying to get a ride. I couldn't get over to get off the road, traffic was horrible. (was in Catoosa after the casino, before they fixed the flow of traffic) He saw me too, and I could tell he recognized me. I still wonder if I had been lied to, or if someone else had taken advantage of him, or what. He was WWII veteran old, and it kinda haunts me how he may have ended up....

I remember one time...(I musta be 5 or 6 years old) my grandfather and I were driving to Texas to see my little brother who was in a burn center. We broke down somewhere between Okemah and Dallas. I remember my grandpa putting his little 380 into his front pants pocket as he stood on the side of the road to flag down a ride. Some guy picked up that poor little old man and his skinny little grandkid. I remember my grandpa sitting in the middle of this truck with me by the door. I can only figure that I remember this because it was the first time I ever saw a pistol and I clearly remember the nervousness in my grandfather's demeanor.

Long story short....some people need to be picked up. I suspect you will know who they are when you see them.

I'm certainly not an advocate of not helping thy neighbor, just pick your neighbors carefully.

you sound like my wife!!! i am just saying where is the evidence that shows that it is dangerous??

There isnt any evidence. Just the Law of Averages. Pick up enough people and sooner or later you will run into one you wish you hadnt gotten involved with.

Benjamin, I am usually right there along with you on your philosphy of thinking. But this time your crazy. Please stop this practice, you seem like a nice and level headed guy but eventually your gonna meet someone who isn't so much. Hitchers can be dangerous and if they are broke down call the state troopers and let them access the situation. Those guys are trained and paid to handle things like that and if the person turns out to be crazy they ge a nice little divider in the car that seperates them.

Like they say you swim with sharks and one day??? I can't talk much I've picked up over a dozen people in the past.

Dude you're crazy! Ain't no free rides in 2011. You know how it goes...Gas, grass, or ass nobody rides for free. Man I can't wait for those two road trips this weekend!

i hear you, it is just tough to drive by and not stop if i am headed that direction anyways... i guess i just don't like to think about the "bad" of humanity and give people the benefit of the doubt.... but i guess i will probably stop, at least now my wife will be more understanding about how much time i spend on the forum since ya'll are siding with her!!!
