Complete 3 gun noob here, haven't even shot a first match yet and am glad that I found this forum.
A little background....
I've been shooting for the better part of 16 years (actual firearms), whereas I've been shooting BB guns since I was a little dude.
I live in the socialist republic of Illinois. Hoping to change that in the next few years.
I've shot pistols, rifles, and shotgun so much that I figured why not get into 3 gun since it looks like a blast. I have two buddies who are quite good at it, one of whom is in the top 5 regularly so I have some good guys to show me the ropes. But rather than continually bug them with questions ( I typically have a lot lol ), I figured I'd learn as much as I could from the posts already on this forum, and also from you all.
What I'm planning on using for my first competition gun-wise is a 4" XD in 9mm since I already have one, it was either between that or a Beretta 92FS which has that very awkward location of the safety so I'm leaning towards the XD for now. I have a 16" RRA with a Trijicon MRO on it that I'll use for rifle, and a Stoeger M3000 that's been worked over by my gunsmith, who specializes in setting up competition guns, and has a tube that holds 12. Probably the weakest part of my game will be the shotgun, mainly because I have very little experience with semi auto's. Most of my experience is with over under's and pump actions so I'm still learning and fully intend on knowing how to run it well by the time I show up for the first match.
I may invest in a 5" XDm in 9mm and have my gunsmith buddy go over it and get it perfected for competition, and just using it for that. I just dished out the cash for that Stoeger and am intending on getting some shotshell caddies so the funds need to recover before getting that XDm.
Most of my experience is in shooting traditional rifle (off the bench, prone, and some on the move and long range). For shotgun, other than blasting water jugs with slugs very quickly with a pump, I shoot a lot of sporting clays, trap, and skeet. This will probably be the one discipline that gives me fits until I can get good at it. Shotgunning is relatively new to me, basically the last three years, so that's my weakest point. For pistols, I practice a great deal whenever I hit the range, mainly drawing from concealment, and practicing the usual stuff for defense handgun use. That typically takes up half of my pistol shooting time, while the other half is spent shooting the safe queens lol. I usually bring three out with me: carry gun, safe queen, and one other which I'd like to be my competition gun. Pistols will definitely be much stronger for me than shotgun, but weaker than rifle. I've never really been a bullseye shooter and focused on combat accuracy while drawing from concealment. What I mean by combat accuracy is I'm not going to walk up to the firing line and shoot one ragged hole in the target. It almost seems harder for me to shoot standing still than drawing and shooting on the move.
Other than that, I like long walks on the beach......just kidding lol. I really enjoy shooting and can't wait to get out and get into my first match. I have an ELS belt, holster, and mag carriers for pistol and AR, but am somewhat stuck on shotshell carriers. I'll start a thread in the gear section to ask that question.
Looking forward to learning a lot on here and thanks for having me!
