Can anyone recommend a place in the Greenville area selling gun safes. I want a good one like a Liberty. TIA.

Academy Sports (off Woodruff) has quite a few gun safes on display but I can't vouch for what brand they are.

tractor supply also has a great Winchester safe that gets put on sale every few months. Probably one of the best deals out there for safes.

Grady's in Anderson has a big selection from what I recall. At one time I saw a really big safe there at prices conparable to the best I could find online.

I'm not posting to suggest a type of safe or a retailer from whom to buy one--just general information on gun safes. If you find one you like with some fire rating (the more the better, obviously) go for it. And, if you've done some research you've probably read to buy bigger than you think you need. I agree with that statement. Any safe that advertises they are a 10, 12, 30 gun safe (whatever the number), don't believe it. It might be possible to fit 12 guns in a 12 gun safe but only if you remove all scopes, slings, bipods, etcetera before locking them in the safe. My experience is that it is impractical. You will also find that once you start storing your ammo and other valuables on the shelves (especially if fire rated) you'll wish you had more space.

I also went with an electronic lock but now wish I had gone with a manual dial. The "internet" folks are saying that an EMP would disable an electronic lock. I've written and researched the matter and it appears that extremely low voltage systems like electronic locks would not be affected. Worst case scenario in my mind, second only to being vaporized in a nuclear ground burst detonation, would be to lose access to my "stuff" in the safe. Good luck finding what you want.

this is also just for informative value. take it with a big grain of salt because im guilty of it.

ammo should not be stored in a safe. even without a perfect seal in a fire the safe will become a huge bomb.

im not rich but i have some ammo. i figure if im home and a fire starts ill (quick elecrtic dial) open it to get the machine gun and run. sounds real smart. i should know better since my brother and his wife died after their house burned.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought about Grady's. Cabela's has a good selection on their website but I was hoping to find a local dealer.

The best deal I found when I purchased mine in Dec. was at Nichols. Talk to crazy mike. Even after tax they were several hundred dollars less than others in SC and NC. If you are looking for a cheap safe like the ones at Tractor Supply I doubt they can save you much, But on the Liberty Presidential/National Security and Browning Pinnacle/Gold Series it was the cheapest prices I could find. I had one of the Cannons from TS before, it is a great safe for the money but I wanted more protection. IF you are going that route, also look at the Winchester/Granite ones at TS. I like it better after owning my Cannon due to the 180 deg door swing, and what I considered better construction.
