I have to write an argumentative essay on gun control and thought I'd seek some guidance for some good quality references. This is a tough one since I'm not for gun control but I have to give my side against and allow for argument for and for possible compromises. I know another student is writing a paper that will go strong for gun control so I wanted to make my professors hair turn a little more gray. :D Google is coming up with tons of stuff but knowing the level of knowledge on this board, I'd like to see some of your favorite sources and statistics. If you have written something, maybe I could reference it as well, giving you your due credit of course.

Thanks,

Chris

lets see, to turn his hair more gray.........

gun owners are nuts.

the 2nd amendment is out of date. nobody needs a gun anymore.

our elected leaders know what is better for us so get a double barrel shotgun and just shoot in the air to discourage criminals.

any statement diane fienstien makes...

im glad to have been of assistance. :D

Google the violent crime statistics for the UK before and after the handgun ban (and accompanying prohibition for use of registered guns in self defense). Crime sky-rocketed.

FBI's UCR shows that violent crime rates in the US have declined in the past couple of decades despite the proliferation of civilian small arms.

Violent crime rates in CCW states are lower than that of anti-gun states. Same is true of holdout cities (Chicago, Detroit, Boston, et al.)

The crime rates of countries with strong or lax anti-gun laws are not correlative. Gun laws don't impact crime rates of nations. Japan bans almost all gun ownership and has extremely low violent crime rates. Mexico also bans almost all gun ownership and has exceptionally high violent crime rates. The US has a high gun ratio and moderate crime rates. Switzerland has high gun ratio and low crime rates. Etc. Gun laws don't have any impact on violent crime whatsoever.

Police agencies support anti-gun laws because they are exempt from them.

Hollywood (actors, directors, movie studios) support anti-gun laws because they are exempt from them.

Rich people support anti-gun laws because the private security contractors they employ are exempt from them.

Average city 911 response time (calls for immediate help, not routine complaints) is upwards of 15 minutes.

Average rural 911 response time (calls for help) is upwards of 25 minutes.

How long would it take a determined psychopath, armed with a knife, to break through your sliding glass door and search your house? The cops may get there before he leaves. They can arrest him and then take pictures of your dismembered body. Or you can have a gun and take personal responsibility for your life and the lives of your family like a normal human instead of outsourcing survival to slightly-higher-than-minimum wage workers with GED's and a badge.

As for "compromise", I am "pro-choice."

If you want to have an abortion; have one.
If you don't want to have an abortion; don't.

If you want to own an AK-47; do it.
If you don't want to; don't.

If you want to legislate, restrict or otherwise impede my ability to defend myself and my family; you're a racist because everyone knows the cops don't respond to 911 calls for poor, black neighborhoods like they do for rich, white neighborhoods. Telling us to rely on 911 means you're sacrificing the safety of black children because you are nervous when negroes have guns.

Jim Crowe era laws restricted the Civil Right to bear arms of blacks.

Hitler.
