and from Google, almanacs, etc. Under the stress of shtf, you'll need at least 3 lbs per day of food. Only about half of an animal's live weight is edible. There's 100 million cats and dogs in the US. The game, birds, fish, livestock, grain, and known edible wild plants will be gone within a month or so of shtf. the dogs and cats will be gone in another month.

If the shtf in dry season, Town, cities, pine forests, grain fields and plains will burn. Guess what will happen then? The same thing that has happened throughout history. Starvation, looting, epidemics, and cannabalism. Being seen walking around, trying to hunt or trap, etc, will get you shot, almost certainly. Noisy gunshots, motors, etc, will draw the desperate to you. You will be competition and a threat, so why wouldn't a guy just shoot you on sight, without warning, from a braced firing position and cover, hmm?

For nearly a year after shtf, you can't show signs of gardening, or you'll get shot and your crops stolen. So you need to cache a nearly a year's supply of food, for each person that you wish to try to save. 1000 lbs is a lot of food-bulk. It will fill a van or a 3/4 ton pickup truck with camper. One person, not 4-5. with 4 people in an SUV, you can't haul enough food to feed those 4 people for much more than a month, 2 months at most.

Can we get a quote from a reliable source for this data?

The baby boomers are going to crush social security. Its mathmatically undeniable, within 5-10 years. I can retire at 62, on about half what I can draw at age 70. I would be nuts to not grab that money (next year) while it's still worth something. Millions of people think the same thing. If all you had to have was a printing press, for your currency to have value, Bangladesh and Rhodesia would be as rich as the US, since those countries can certainly afford printing presses. Politicians don't DARE touch Social Security, so the only thing that they CAN do is inflate the $ until it's no longer accepted by anyone overseas. The way nobody accepted the Russian ruble, back in the day. People are going to find out the hard way, and soon, too. Why do you thing "prepping" has gone mainstream and so many survival shows are doing well on TV? Most people DO sense that we are in deep doodoo, and there's no way out of it, either.

I told you where to look. Google is your friend. Almanacs will tell you how much food we import and export. there's 300 million people in the USA. do the math. It's very simple. People lack the knowledge, good sense and salt to jerk meat. the cats and dogs will run and kill the game and livestock, until the people eat them all. We used to stockpile huge amounts of grain, 30 odd years ago, we stopped doing that.

Resurrecting an old thread here. 3 lbs seems like a King's ransom to live on per person per day.
It depends on the fat/protein count of the food. I would say the average person could live, not thrive, on 8-12 oz of meat and some veggies/rice.
Keep in mind too, that in a world changing event, that many sick/infirm/diabetic/medicinally dependent will go quickly. Without any other factors but a loss in power and shipping that roughly 5-10% COULD be dead within 4 weeks. Food for thought. That will lessen the dependence on food sources. Within a year 25+% could be gone. Animals and plants would see an initial hit, but would make a ferocious comeback if the event wasn't biological/radiological.

Stockpile food regardless to make yourself a smaller target. 3 mo worth is still better than 3 weeks worth.
